Experiencia de clase

This is a continuation of the first "Learn to Play for Beginners Class 2.5." Continue your learning from where you left off in class 2.5! Students must have completed class 2.5 or have prior approval from the teacher to join.

The focus in this class will be performance and refining chosen pieces of music. Please note a weekly breakdown of classes is a simple outline as each section is custom designed for the students enrolled.

Students will continue to learn:
-to recognize the keys on the piano and their names.
-finger numbers and how they relate to the position on the piano.
-melodic contour
-learn the value of practice and extension at home
-basic and complex rhythms and how to play and clap them
-proper piano position and posture
-how to set up a healthy practice routine at home
-record keeping for practice

Students will work intensively through the lesson book and theory book from the 2B level. For those students who would like an additional challenge I recommend purchasing the performance book or one of the other supplementary books to play for fun. Students may be asked to volunteer to lead a piece from their assignment for the following week in class. This will provide the instructor with additional opportunity for specific feedback and for the students to share their skills. This is not required so students are welcome to decline to play for others but it is highly encouraged.

All students will require a keyboard or piano to practice at home, in this level it is highly important to have a keyboard with weighted key and pedal to start to refine their skills. Regular daily practice will be required in order to improve as with any instrument instruction.

Michelle Wheeler grew up with a passion for music in any form. With the encouragement of her band teachers she flourished as a flautist and continued on after high school to complete her Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Regina. In her desire to continue her education she studied flute with Marie-Noelle Berthelet at the University of Regina to complete her Masters of Music Performance. She has trained in Music for Young Children, Kindermusik, and is working towards Level 1 certification in KinderFlute and Blocki Flute methods.

Currently Michelle is an active learner and is enjoying working with a community of piano teachers and professors to learn and share strategies for teaching piano to beginners. Michelle will complete her certification through the Royal Conservatory of Music as an elementary piano specialist in December. The basis of this intensive course is to work with top piano pedagogues and learn techniques and strategies to make her students well rounded and successful. Though already an accomplished piano and flute teacher in her own right, Michelle is always wanting to learn more and share ideas with others to give students the best possible experience.

Michelle has worked as the program coordinator for the Heart of the City Piano Program, secretary for Saskatchewan Angel Dresses, and board member for the Regina Eastview Daycare. She speaks French and English and enjoys enhancing her music classes with the French language as well as sign language. She loves going for walks, swimming, and spending time with her three children Roch, Adelle, and Lilah.
