If you choose a bigger yarn, please select a bigger crochet hook, such as an 8 to 10mm. Metal hooks tend to be easier to use for beginners, but be sure there are no burrs on them.
Worsted weight yarn Crochet hook in size I, J, or K (5 to 6mm) If you choose thicker yarn, such as "bulky" or "super bulky", you will need bigger hooks like M,N, or O (8 to 10mm). Keep in mind that it is difficult for young learners to work with a hook that is too small for the yarn they are working with.
