This class will introduce a new aspect of the African Diaspora to learners each week, covering areas such as language, culture, music, food, arts, travel, politics, history, historical figures or geography. Information will be presented in a number of potential ways each week, from lecture style to exploration of videos or other content on a subject, and other in-class activities for learners to engage in. After this initial presentation of the week's information, there will be an opportunity for discussion and further activities, either educational or just for fun. Discussing new areas of knowledge in this lesser-known subject area will lend to a deeper understanding of various communities, societies and key figures of African-descent, as well as learning something new about different parts of the world where African-descended people live their lives!

This class encourages learner exploration and openness to learn about a different culture in the world each week. Although the focus of the class is on aspects and perspectives of the African diaspora, learners will also learn about other cultures where African-descended communities live in different parts of the world. These opportunities allow learners to gain cultural knowledge and awareness, and to have the chance to discuss what they might already know about a specific aspect of world history or culture. These opportunities encourage learners to discuss what they already know in these areas, while gaining a unique understanding of a particular history or culture from the perspective of African Diasporic identities. But even for learners with previous knowledge in one area, the diversity of topics covered means there will always be opportunities to learn something new, even for students with some background in a few areas. So, no previous knowledge is required, just curiosity and respect for something new!
