This program will teach students the basics of successful essay writing. They will practice outlining and writing clear, concise responses to answer questions. By the end, students will be familiar with the following essay genres: argumentative, expository, narrative, and descriptive.

Students will be reading and analyzing brief passages as a group; highlighting relevant information as we read. Next, we will create an outline, which we will use to draft a well-structured short essay response to a question.

Students will learn how they should use evidence to support their thesis statement. They will review writing clear and convincing topic sentences. Most importantly, students will discover and refine their unique voice through independent, creative writing projects.

Monday - Argumentative Essays

Tuesday - Expository Essays

Wednesday - Narrative Essays

Thursday - Descriptive Essays

Friday - Wrap up and review; including creative Narrative Essay assignment

My teaching style is clear, direct, enthusiastic, and engaging. My goal is to equip students with the skills necessary to be a gifted writer in class next year and beyond. Additionally, I want to foster a love of writing and a sense of confidence in each student about their own unique writing style and individual voice.

Students will have the opportunity to interact during this program through "share time"; where students have the option to share their writing with the group. Additionally, I will be teaching a language arts standard at the end of each class. I teach the four square method, as one method of organization; however, it does not work well for every student. Therefore, I teach writing with a basic outlining method as well. I will be available to respond to emails outside of class; I'm extremely responsive.

No prior experience with writing essays is required for this camp, just a basic understanding of sentence structure.

This class is great for students who can receive group feedback; however, for more individualized attention and detailed feedback and notes on assignments, I recommend Writing tutoring with me on Outschool.

Please note, no transfers or refunds granted, within one week of class start date. Therefore, please ensure this date and time works for you prior to signing up for this class.
