In this debate program, students will debate a number of interesting topics for children. They will learn to evaluate and develop well-organized arguments. Additionally, they will create thoughtful rebuttals by identifying potential arguments against their opponent. The teacher explains concepts in a clear, simple way which all children can understand. She has taught kindergarten in the past, so she knows how to simplify complex subject matter so it is easily accessible to all elementary school students. This program is about self-growth; a number of students who enrolled in the debate camp said they noticed improvements in their speech, confidence, and debating skills from the beginning to the end. Each session, students will debate a new and exciting topic. Students will learn essential note-taking skills as well as speech skills in this camp. They will learn the difference between correlation and causation. Students will learn to write clear and persuasive introductions and conclusions. Clearly articulating a position in front of their peers will enhance their confidence and develop future leaders. Session 1: Students will learn the basics of debate. What is a debate? The effective style, speed, tone, and volume one should have while communicating ideas. How you draft a clear and convincing introduction and conclusion. How you build a case; communicating three convincing reasons. What is a rebuttal? How to evaluate the other side's argument. Daily debate topic - Is year-round education positive? Session 2: Students will review the basics of debate, and work on enhancing note-taking skills in order to better communicate. Daily debate topic - Is television negative for kids? Session 3: Students will learn the difference between correlation and causation; how correlation does not imply causation. This will enable them to make tighter arguments. Daily debate topic - Should high school students go to a four-year college? Session 4: Students will review basic writing skills, and how to effectively draft an introduction and conclusion. Daily debate topic - Should we replace teachers with computers? Session 5: Final day of program; we will review any lingering questions prior to the daily debate. (The goal of this program is to continue throughout the Fall for those students who are interested in continuing) Daily debate topic - Should schools ban cell phones? Any and all necessary articles for the debate will be read aloud and reviewed in class on a series of slides. There is no prior experience in debate needed for this program; just an open mind and positive attitude. Please note, no transfers or refunds, within one week of class start date. Therefore, please ensure the dates and times work for you, prior to signing up for class.
