Experiencia de clase

This class is ideal for students wishing to brush up on foundational Latin grammar for any reason. Some may find it beneficial as preparation for a big test; others might want some remedial grammatical support over a longer school break; and others might just want to enjoy a few extra hours of Latin in their life!

This class is recommended for students who have completed one to two years of Latin study. Ideally students will already be familiar with the majority of the grammatical topics listed in the schedule before joining this class: this is more of a fast-paced review than an introduction.

Four of the five 60-minute lessons will have a reading/translating component, a grammatical component, and a vocabulary-building component. We will read/translate for the duration of Day 5, discussing grammar along the way but not working on any specific new topic that day. Readings will be provided as PDFs in the Classroom prior to the lesson. I use Classical pronunciation in my lessons. Students will have the opportunity to translate in front of the class. I aim to teach students how to "show their work" when completing a Latin translation: we don't just get the correct answer by instinct and move on; we discuss the reason behind the translation, how the grammar and syntax of Latin work to give us the meaning at hand.

Orientación para padres
Ancient Rome was a grisly place for many reasons, and this is frequently reflected in the readings done in Latin classes. All of the readings I have selected are school-appropriate, but may contain monsters, bloodshed, descriptions of enslaved peoples, battles, etc.

Hello! I’m Larissa Laver and I’ve been teaching since 2008. I’ve worked with young children through young adults over the years: I have taught Pre-K through collegiate level courses and literally every grade in between at some point in my career. I mainly have taught Latin language from elementary through advanced levels, and occasionally teach Ancient Greek as well. I also teach Ancient Greek and Roman History courses, Classical Mythology, and the Homeric Epics. I have traveled extensively in Greece and Italy, and what I learned on those adventures often finds its way into my lessons.

I consider myself a lifelong learner and am always digging deeper to discover more about the world we live in, its history, peoples, languages, religions, cuisines, and more! I also love when my students challenge me with their amazing questions and observations. I spend much time reading and researching in the hopes of being a better citizen of the world and educator.

When I'm not engaged in academic pursuits, I spend my time with my amazing husband. Together we love to travel, play tennis, and hang out with our pet chickens! When I'm on my own, I love kickboxing, yoga (sometimes outside with the chickens!), and gardening (also with the chickens).
