I teach reading skills in this class. This class will continue to build on developing the student's ability to read and understand Latin. Main topics to be covered will be grammar including a focus on building verb recognition. One of the values of Latin is that studying it improves a student's ability to write and to read. This fact means that studying some Latin is a nearly ideal vehicle for teaching basic English skills. At all levels of study, I want my students to leave my class not only discovering that learning languages is rewarding, but also it will improve reading and writing skills. My goal as a teacher for the intermediate student is first and foremost to continue to engage a young student in the subject. MY class structure balances content with some fun such as Latin Jeopardy. I introduce periodic game quizzes in class as a fun way to learn Latin. In my 30-year Latin teaching career in U.S. public schools, I have taught classes for beginners all the way up to teaching students who are advanced enough to read Vergil's Aeneid for IB and AP exams. Many of my past Latin students know Mr. Davidson makes learning Latin fun and rewarding. Students will interact with me directly via the Zoom classroom. The first 4 weeks of class will be review of important parts of Latin phrases. Beginning with Week 5, each week will continue through the chapters in the Latin is Fun, Book 2, along with pertinent Roman History and Culture and riddle me this quizzes and Jeopardy games. Week 1 (10/22-10/23/24): Review of Noun Declensions Week 2 (10/29-10/30/24): Review of Subjunctive Verbs Week 3 (11/5-11/6/24): Review of Passive Verbs Week 4 (11/12-11/13/24): Review of Prepositions and Compound Verbs Week 5 (11/19-11/20/24): Chapter 1 of Latin is Fun, Book 2 Week 6 (11/26-11/27/24): Chapter 2 of Latin is Fun, Book 2 Week 7 (12/3-12/4/24): Chapter 3 of Latin is Fun, Book 2 Week 8 (12/10-12/11/24): Chapter 4 of Latin is Fun, Book 2 If you are serious about having your child develop English vocabulary and reading skills, then this class will be very useful. Homework will take about 10-15 minutes in preparation for each class. Student progress will be assessed through short in-class quizzes. I shall be managing this class through on-going classes that meet two times a week at $20 per class, $40 per week. The goal is to make learning Latin fun and interesting. There is no end date for this class. This ongoing class does not finish after a set number of classes so that student may join at any point.
Metas de aprendizaje
A specific learning goal is to improve reading comprehension so that students are able to begin reading Latin authors in the original Latin. See the course description in the above section for specifics.
