***This class will NOT cancel for low enrollment.*** Phonemic Awareness is an essential early literacy skill. Beginning readers must be able to look at letters and manipulate the sounds (phonemes) that each letter makes. The skills acquired in this class will promote and strengthen phonics skills. Phonemic Awareness skills practice those sounds and manipulations using just our ears. We will listen to and make letter sounds together as a group. Each week we will follow the same basic routine but will practice with different words. We will: - Isolate phonemes, for example, "Tell me the first sound you hear in the word pig" (/p/). - Identify phonemes, for example, "Tell me the sound that is the same in bike, boy and bell" (/b/). - Phoneme substitution, for example, "Change the /b/ in "bat" to /h/ ("hat')." Phoneme substitution can take place for initial sounds (cat-hat), middle sounds (cat-cut) or ending sounds (cat-cap). - Oral segmenting: The teacher says a word and students say the individual sounds. - Oral blending: The teacher says each sound and students respond with the word. - Sound deletion: The teacher says a word, has students repeat it, and then instructs students to repeat the word without the first sound. For example, the teacher might say "now say 'ball' without the /b/", which students should respond to with "all". - Onset-rime manipulation: which requires isolation, identification, segmentation, blending, or deletion of onsets (the single consonant or blend that precedes the vowel and following consonants), for example, j-ump, st-op, str-ong. It is important that learners can keep their microphones on as much as possible. Please try to keep your learner in a quiet space to reduce background noise. *** age listed is a recommendation, this class is appropriate for any learner that is working on a kindergarten reading level *** Group this class with other classes.
