Join me for this fun Kindergarten literacy and math class with a certified teacher! I love teaching and it is important to me to create an environment where children are excited to come to class, participate, and have fun while learning! I taught Third Grade, First Grade, Kindergarten and a Transition to Kindergarten class for over 17 years and am excited to teach your learners on Outschool! This class is for students who are in Kindergarten and is based on the Kindergarten literacy and math standards. The skills learned in this class will prepare your learner for first grade. We will meet throughout the year so we will develop friendships with the other learners. I love to teach and love for learners to participate throughout the class. We will learn by playing games, writing, drawing pictures, and moving throughout the class. I am very energetic, love to teach children and teach in a way that makes learning fun! This class will prepare your learner for first grade. Get $6 off this class with coupon code MOTLELEARN6 This ongoing class will continue throughout the school year and each week will have a different theme. We will have fun, interactive literacy, writing, phonics, reading, language arts, and math activities that go along with our weekly theme! These literacy, phonics, and math activities will develop a strong foundation to prepare learners for first grade. Each class will begin with a personal greeting for every child and then we will sing a fun song, explore the calendar to learn about the month and day, explore patterning and do some math activities. We will learn about number sense through our Mystery Numbers of the week! We will learn to write the numbers, learn about different ways to show the number such as the number word, tally marks, the tens frame, and place value. We will also count to 100, count to 100 by 5's and 10's, learn basic addition and subtraction, patterning and so much more! Math skills that we will learn throughout this class are: Graphing - reading and interpreting a graph Counting and skip counting Identifying and writing numbers Learning to read and write the number words Demonstrating different ways to make the number Even and odd numbers Reading a number line Time Tally Marks Tens Frame Place Value Addition and subtraction Identify and draw 2D shapes Learning position and number order words Solving word problems To learn about the letters and their sounds we will have Mystery Letters of the week! We will practice writing the uppercase and lowercase letters using correct letter formation. We will play letter and sound games to learn and reinforce the letter sounds. Even though we will focus on the Mystery Letters of the week, we will also review the other letters and their sounds. Each week we will explore making words using the letters of the week. We will learn to build and read CVC, CCVC, and CVCC words using our blending arm and stretching words to hear the sounds in them. We will also have fun finding rhyming word pairs and finding syllables for words. Each week we will learn to read and write new sight words as well as play sight word games to reinforce our recognition of the sight words. Literacy and phonics skills that we will explore are: Identifying and writing the letters - uppercase and lowercase Learning the letter sounds Vowels/Consonants Long and short vowels Long vowel teams R controlled vowels Beginning and ending digraphs Beginning and ending blends Syllables Blending letter sounds together Rhyming Identifying the beginning, middle and ending sounds in words Making words Word families Reading and writing sight words We will also have a Mystery Box where we will read clues together and making a prediction about what is in the Mystery Box! We will identify sight words as we read the clues. Each day, we will read the morning message together and answer the question of the day. I love for all children to have a chance to guess, share and be heard so I encourage all children to raise their hands and wait to be called on. This way we can have a fun, structured class where everyone can participate by taking turns. Throughout this class, we will also learn about the writing process. We will start by learning about labeling pictures with words and eventually learn how to build and write a sentence using nouns, verbs, and adjectives. At the end of each class we will have a scavenger hunt where everyone will find something to share with us that fits a theme! I love this scavenger hunt because it helps teach children social skills such as taking turns and listening when our friends are talking. It is important to me for all children to be heard and feel important. If someone doesn't want to share then that is ok! Each class we will also sing a fun thematic movement game or song that will get give our brains a break and get our bodies moving! Each week will be thematic! Below are the themes we will cover during each month. September- Friendship, Animal Alphabet, Pumpkins November - Turkeys, Silly Vegetables, Fall Fun December - Gingerbread, Reindeer and Caribou, Cold Weather Fun January - Snow, Snow people, Polar Bears, Penguins February - Seals, Friendship, Hearts, Hibernation and Migration, Bears and Teddy Bears March - Farm, Cows, Rabbits, Spring and Oviparous Animals April - Dinosaurs, Rainbows, Lambs, Gardens May - Horses, Turtles, Frogs, Caterpillars and Butterflies Our curriculum progresses throughout the year to get the learners ready for first grade. In December, we will have already learned the basics of identifying and writing the letters and numbers, learned the different letter sounds, short and long vowels, basic sight words, word families, and CVC words. We will then expand our curriculum to learn more about consonant blends, digraphs, the silent e, stretching longer words, and spelling compound words. We will also begin to learn about diphthongs, vowel teams, the bossy r, and different long vowel spelling rules. In writing, we will learn to write different types of sentences and how to add adjectives to make our sentences more descriptive. We will also learn about past tense and present tense verbs and much more! We will not meet on September 2 for Labor Day, but I will refund that day for you. Whenever we don't meet as a class I always refund you for that class. I love stuffed animals and have stuffed animals help us throughout our class. Your child is welcome to bring a stuffed animal or special toy to class. A dry erase board or paper is needed daily for this class. I love to teach and love for learners to participate throughout our class! Learners will be unmuted for the class, unless I hear background conversations or noises. Please make sure your child knows how to mute and unmute. I hope you can join me for this fun class!

Hi! I love to teach preschool and early elementary classes and strive for ways to make learning fun and exciting! It is my goal to celebrate all learners and help them to love learning. Teaching phonics, reading, writing and math skills are my absolute favorite!
I graduated from Hiram College in Ohio with a BA in Elementary Education and a Reading Endorsement which means that I did extra course work so I could become a reading specialist if I chose. After college, I taught kindergarten, 1st and 3rd grade for a total of 8 years. During that time, I was honored to be selected as Teacher of the Year for my elementary school and finalist for county wide Teacher of the Year in Nashville, TN. In addition to teaching, I was also a curriculum developer and workshop presenter for 5 years. I created reading, writing, and math curriculum for the county, and then trained elementary teachers K-5 how to teach that curriculum in their classrooms. I also worked for a publishing company developing reading and math units. I stayed home with my children when they were young and then taught a transition to kindergarten class for 6 years.
I love teaching children and believe that learning should be fun and engaging! Children learn best when they are laughing, smiling, singing, drawing, doing hands-on activities, moving, and having fun! For me, there is no greater joy than helping a child grow and learn! I love to play games, sing and make learning fun!
One fun fact about me is that I love animals and have many stuffed animals. My stuffed animals love to join me in my classes. If your learner has a special stuffed animal we would love to have it join us too!
