If your student is interested in learning to sew starting from the basics to intermediate, independent sewing, this course is for you! This course is a complete sewing program for boys and girls that will cover machine and hand sewing basics. Students following this program will learn to make the following items: - Small stuffed pillow - Tote bag - Pajama/gym shorts - Child apron - Zippered pencil pouch - Hemming and repairing (plus a mini felt toy stuffed animal) Sewing skills that will be covered include: - Reading and following a sewing pattern - Sewing machine features and explanation of stitches, tension and troubleshooting - How to wind a bobbin and thread your machine - Measuring and cutting fabric (basic knowledge of fractions and how to use a ruler is helpful) - How to sew zippers and buttons - How to encase elastic, sew straps and pockets - Hand-sewing basics (hemming, darning, small repairs, patches, buttons and more) - Detailed explanation of different fabric types, including special occasion/cosplay fabrics For each project I will present a video tutorial and provide any printable patterns needed. As this is an offline course there are no live Zoom meetings; however, I am available to answer your questions any time during the scheduled course. This is a wonderful opportunity and one that I've found to be particularly helpful for young beginners. It is my goal for each student to complete this course with the skills to sew independently. At the end of our time together, I will provide a digital certificate of completion that you can print out and proudly display! **By enrolling in this class, you are accessing patterns and video tutorials that you can download and keep to use for as long as you need. Please refrain from sharing or redistributing these copyrighted materials with anyone outside of our classroom. Thank you!
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will progress from being completely brand-new to sewing, to making their very own projects independently! This course starts at the absolute basics of your machine right out of the box. You do not need any prior knowledge of sewing at all.

más de 6 semanasLección 1:
Project 1: Stuffed pillow
Welcome to KidSew! This week we will be exploring our machines and getting our sewing feet wet by making a stuffed pillow. You will not need to print a pattern for this week.
It might be helpful to watch the recording all the way through first. You do have the option to pause, rewind and fast forward as needed, though, so you might be able to watch as you sew. It's up to you!
Lección 2:
Project 2: Tote Bag
Now that you are hopefully a bit more confident with your machine, we're going to jump in and make a fully lined, extra-large tote bag!
There are several more steps and it might take you longer to make this week's project at first, but are a quick sew once you know how to make them. They make great gifts too! There is no pattern to print for this project.
Lección 3:
Project 3: Gym Shorts
This week we will be making a pair of gym or pajama shorts. The size of the first pattern goes up to size 14 (girls), but the second one is for adult sizes and typically fits boys as well. In the tutorial I will also discuss how to make the shorts less form-fitting, if you want a looser pant leg.
Make sure to pay close attention to the tutorial and sew slowly and carefully. Stretch fabrics are a little tricky to sew with, but you can do it!
Lección 4:
Project 4: Child Apron
This week we will be working on an apron, which will help you learn skills like gathering and sewing exterior pockets. This particular apron is sized for a small child (approx kids' sizes 6 - 9), but is a good practice size. Even if it might be too small for you it could make an excellent gift, uses less fabric, and you will learn critical sewing skills that you can use to make a larger apron later.

Orientación para padres
Young students may require help from a parent to access videos, post photos, measure and cut fabric, etc. This course uses U.S. Imperial system measurements, so students preferring the metric system may need assistance converting measurements. However, this is also addressed in the videos and is simple to do.
Lista de útiles escolares
A supply list will be available to download and print upon enrollment. -Normal basic sewing supplies (notions): straight pins, pincushion, different colored threads, fabric scissors (it is helpful to have a separate pair of sharp scissors to be used for fabric only), needles (for hand sewing), chalk, ruler and measuring tape. -Cutting surface: a cutting mat and rotary blade is nice to have, but not required. Clear a table with space large enough to set the fabric and pattern pieces on. -Sewing machine: machine should be a newer model and in good working condition, with needle installed. If you have questions about the machine you have or are looking to purchase one, feel free to message me! You want to avoid the "toy" machines for kids. The normal price range for a basic sewing machine is approx. $100-$150 USD, and some of the popular brands include Brother, Singer and Janome. -Patterns: these are provided and available for download upon enrollment. When printing them, please make sure the printer settings do not adjust the size of the pattern. Uncheck the "Fit to Page" box and test the 1" square with a ruler after printing. -Fabric: basic cotton quilting fabric will work for all of our projects. You can also choose a duck canvas fabric for your tote bag, if you like. We will also be working with stretch knits for week 3. Each pattern will specify how much fabric is needed for that project. - Stuffing (poly-fill) to stuff your pillow. - 1-2 sheets of felt, any color

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
I began making my own costumes, room accessories and clothing items as a young girl. As an adult, I started my own successful sewing business, selling my own creations as a professional seamstress both online and locally. I often make custom dance costumes for my dance students, digitize and sew machine embroidery, and I teach basic sewing classes for kids both locally and online through a private virtual homeschooling academy.
