  • While the main focus will be on allowing young fantasy enthusiasts to share their love of curious creatures, legends, and mysterious monsters, we will also be practicing important social skills and academics. We will learn about habitats, adaptation, and other STEAM concepts. We will develop mapping skills and learn about local geography, terrain, and history. The creature lessons will provide a fun, approachable framework for these discussions and will help the young explorer to build and develop observation, recollection, and communication skills, as well as foster curiosity, wonder, and interest in the world around them, big and small, real and imagined. The field guide will serve as a fun keepsake and reference for future fantasy studies and reflection.
Shiny Happy Kids teachers have been working with students ages 3-18 in a variety of settings, from art schools and STEAM labs to libraries, summer camps, forest school, and even RPG game tables. One thing we all have in common is a dedication to creating safe, positive, inclusive spaces and experiences where kids can connect, experiment, be challenged, share their passions, and just be their wonderful selves. We want you to SHINE!
Shiny Happy Kids is committed to providing a safe, welcoming, affirming space for all kinds of learners. Growing up as neurodivergent and gifted kids, our teachers understand the need for classrooms where everyone gets to shine!
Printed materials will be provided each week and will be posted in the classroom. A printer is highly recommended.
Students should also come to class each week with the following:
Dedicated notebook or folder to serve as a Field Guide
Coloring and drawing supplies
Glue stick
Scissors
Show-and-tell item related to the theme (once per month)

Any additional supplies will be requested in the classroom and will always be common household, office, or craft materials.
All material will be presented in a sensitive, age-appropriate manner. The approach will be light-hearted, fun, and often silly. The emphasis will be on what these creatures look like, their main features, non-scary stories, legends, and fairy tales where we find them. All mythological content will be based on kid-friendly versions. Although our teachers are committed to providing a safe learning environment, some of these creatures can be a bit creepy and might be difficult for sensitive learners. Please reach out to the instructor with any questions or concerns you have regarding your learner's unique needs.
