Experiencia de clase

We discuss the books at length so make sure your child has read and has copies of the books so we don't give away any plot lines or any spoilers. If your child has taken my other Keeper Book Clubs this class will have some similarities. Please be aware of that before signing up.

I like my book studies to be open discussions where students think critically about the books and respond to questions from me and one another. We will also discuss different literary elements in Shannon Messenger's books as we go through this class. We will be doing all things Keeper so hold on tight for the ride!

Week 1-- This will be marathon discussion of books 1 and 2. We will discuss what person the Keeper books are told from: first or third person. What is first person? What is third person? Why does it matter? Why is this in Sophie's point of view? How would things be different from another character's point of view. What would the books be like if told from the view of another intelligent species? What characters should be given their own Keeper stories.
I will give all students a chance to answer questions and participate in the class discussion.
Homework will be to tell an important scene from another character's perspective or write the first paragraph of a book told from another character's perspective.

Week 2-- We will discuss books 3 and 4. What symbols would you give to the different intelligent species and characters in the books? Why do authors use symbols? Are there any symbols that you see in the books that we have not talked about? Homework will be to pick one element of the series and what you think it symbolizes.

Week 3--We will discuss books 5 and 6 in the series. As part of our study of books 5 and 6 we will discuss setting and how it is used in the Keeper books. What are some differences between the Lost Cities and the Forbidden cities? Where would you want to live in the Lost Cities? Why? How is the setting different between each of the homelands of the intelligent species. Homework will be a list of what you would bring back from the Lost Cities.

Day 4-- We will discuss books 7 and 8 of the series. What happens in these books? Is the series starting to wind down? What questions are we left with? Are we getting answers to the many Keeper questions? Homework will be to write out the first paragraph of book 10 (your version).

Day 5--We will discuss in depth books 8.5 and 9 in the Keeper book series. Each student will be given the opportunity to share their list of what they would bring back from the Lost Cities. After discussion we will discuss plot, rising and falling action, climax and conclusion.
We will do as much depth as possible in each of the books We will talk themes in the Keeper novels. We will share our paragraphs for the next book and then dive into all the Keeper themes in the novels. We will end on what threads still need to be resolved for the series? What do you want to see happen?

In some classes we will compare and contrast the Keeper books with other popular young adult novels.
Because my classes allow for class discussion some classes may go over the 45 minute class time by a couple of minutes.

Orientación para padres
This book has some mild violence. Sophie and her friends are helping to fight a war with another group called the Neverseen. They use their special abilities, throwing stars and other weapons to defeat the enemy. There is also some romance between the characters in this book. Characters hug and hold hands. So far in the book series there has only been one kiss. Two of the characters want to date Sophie, the main character, and there is tension around that situation. We do discuss some of these situations in our class, so please be aware that these issues may come up. For more guidance about violence and romance in the book series please refer to Common Sense Media.
Requisitos previos

I fell in love with the first Keeper of the Lost Cities book about 4 years ago and then shared the great story with my 4 daughters. Since then we have read all the books in the series multiple times, listened to the series on Audible, and gone to see Shannon Messenger in person and had her sign several of our books!
I graduated with a BA in English and Spanish for secondary school teaching. I have always loved reading and teaching book studies to students of all ages. I have taught English, Spanish, ESL and religion classes to students ages 7-18 in public school and private settings. I have taught many book studies to ages 8-17 including but not limited to-- The Old Man and the Sea, Revolution is Not a Dinner Party, Where the Red Fern Grows, The Red Badge of Courage, The Great Gatsby, The Outsiders, The Scarlet Letter, Tom Sawyer, and others. I am currently teaching a Keeper of the Lost Cities meet up on Outschool for ages 9-14. Reading is one of my passions and I love sharing that with my children and my students.
