During these five days, students will learn the basics of computer science using Code.org & Scratch Jr. Our philosophies at TechWise Academy: 1) Embrace Mistakes - Coding provides immediate feedback to the learner to correct any mistakes along the way. Mistakes are part of the process of learning. 2) Enjoy Learning - We use fun characters and games to make the learning fun for your student. We know that students learn better when they enjoy the process. 3) Explore Computer Science - We want to expose the problem solving techniques used in computer science to every child. We know every student will not be programmers one day; however, we want to give tools that can be used across any field of study or career. Below is a rough breakdown of what we will cover over the course of the class: Day 1 - What is programming/coding? What types of things do programmers create? -Introduction to the Code.org platform: How to login with your credentials from class, how to view your progress. -First Code.org activity during class. (Students will be guided through specific puzzles and will have time to work through some on their own and can ask questions) Day 2 - Decomposition - Breaking a complex problem into smaller problems. Creating a step-by-step sequence to solve a problem. -Offline activity during class to reinforce and prime -Additional code.org activity Day 3 - Iterators - What is an iterator (repeat loop) and why are computers so great at them?. -Sample puzzles from Code.org to work through during class. Day 4 - Introduction to Scratch Jr. - How is this similar/different from Code.org? -Overview of the Scratch Jr. platform: How to create a project, add/create backgrounds, sprites (characters), and scenes. -How to use the paint tool to modify characters and backgrounds during class. Day 5 - What is an algorithm? Step-by-step sequence to solve a problem or accomplish a task -Discussion about algorithms in everyday life. -Create an animation in Scratch Jr. to implement an algorithm with iterators (cat dribbling a basketball) during class. Learners will follow the lesson with their own device and will have time to create on their own. The teacher will be available for discussion in each class and may interact with offline activities (for educational priming or learning reinforcement). This class is for those students with little to no prior experience with coding.

Orientación para padres
We will be using a third-party tool called Scratch Jr. in this course. This tool was developed by several Universities as a platform for coding for pre-readers. https://www.scratchjr.org/.
It will allow your learner to create their own games & stories after we've worked through the puzzles on Code.org.
The app will need to be downloaded on either Android, iOS, or the Chrome Web Store.
Lista de útiles escolares
Students should have a separate tablet/chromebook to use for coding and a device for the online classroom. The tablet should be Android or iOS and the student should have browser access (for code.org) and have the app Scratch Jr. downloaded.

Licenciatura desde University of Kentucky
We teach coding & robotics classes to kids Pre-K-12th grade students. We focus primarily on Computational Thinking, or the problem-solving framework, behind Computer Science to make our classes translate well into other areas of study.
What We Do
We are creating a generation of problem solvers and innovators through coding and computer science principles.
Designing and coding video games is something we believe any child with a computer and desire to learn is capable of doing. In summary, our mission is to teach coding and computer science to children, K-12, and introduce them to new ways to problem solve and explore curiosity and creativity. We do this because we feel strongly that this learning style will help them grow into better problem solvers who don’t give up when given a challenge, but instead embrace it as an opportunity.
Our Approach
Embrace mistakes: Evidence suggests during initial learning students retain more information if they’re given the freedom to make mistakes. Encourage them to learn and grow in confidence through mistakes as they seek an answer.
Enjoy learning: Learning and problem solving can be fun through creative activities like coding and game design.
Explore computer science: Computer science is a powerful medium in which students can express themselves to solve challenges in unique ways to enhance their creativity and problem solving.
Our Experience
We've been teaching Pre-K-12th grade students in person since 2015. We partner with local schools and teachers to ensure the curriculum translates well to local education standards.
