What sets this class apart, like any classroom, is the educator. No boring teachers allowed is a strict rule that I follow daily. The content of the paired passage matters less than the way the teacher delivers the content, and I deliver these already exciting passages in a jubilant, energetic, and humorous style. Each week features a new paired passage set, one fiction and the other non-fiction. We read the two short passages, highlighting and discussing the literacy components of each. Students can volunteer to read or listen as I read with voice, tone or when I stop to discuss my self-corrections as I read (we all make them). We then leap into five multiple-choice questions. Here I teach the comprehension and test-taking strategies I have been teaching for over 20 years in the classroom, like actually going back and locating the answer! We then write short constructed responses to those pesky 1-2 sentence responses. Finally, an extended essay-style prompt will be provided for optional homework. And, of course, I have to plug the idea of extending that written essay prompt into one of my other offered classes on Outschool, where I could provide more assistance. This is a stand-alone class where the content changes weekly, meaning you can join and leave the class as needed.
