Opinion writing can be a fun and exciting genre for young learners to find a passion and purpose for writing. It is one of my favorites to study, and the pleasure I get from teaching this genre makes for an enjoyable class.

During day one (I DO, WE DO), using my high-interest opinion topic, we complete a graphic organizer that includes all the needed information to write an opinion response. We then use the graphic organizer to write a 5-paragraph opinion paper. When students take quality, organized notes, the writing is basically done for you to begin a first and final draft. We wrap up day one with students receiving their list of possible opinion topics and their own Google document, including the graphic organizer and helpers. This gives students time to think about and work on their writing outside of class if wanted before the next class.

During day two (WE DO, YOU DO), students continue completing the graphic organizer with my help and begin writing their opinion pieces. We brainstorm ideas, thoughts, details, and persuasive language. If needed, we locate and conduct any research to further back up our opinion. I have limited the number of students in the class so that I have the time to bounce around and check in on each student as they work and need assistance. Furthermore, students can help each other as we work on Google Docs.

Day three (WE DO, YOU DO) is for finishing their draft, revising, and editing. We also learn to add images, graphs, charts, and a title cover page. The No Boring Teachers Rule is fully enforced with energetic assistance and a fresh batch of energy to drown out the usually dull task of revising and editing. To wrap up the three-day course, we share our opinion writing with others or explore other ideas to publish our opinion masterpiece.

Please message me if you are still waiting to see this class on a date or time that works for you. I will do my best to accommodate any requests.
