In this short, one month course, students will analyze historical events from various perspectives to understand that there is often more than one way to recount history. They will analyze why and how history is recorded the way it is, and consider the need to dig deeper into events to understand a greater context and perspective. To that end, students will study history as told from various perspectives, gender, culture, class etc, in an effort to understand the various ways in which history can be viewed and recorded. Examples may include the history of the American pioneer as viewed from a man and a woman's point of view, the American Farmworkers movement and the leadership of Ceasar Chavez AND Delores Huerta, World War II and the internment of the Japanese, the Mau Mau uprising in Kenya in the fight for independence, etc.

There will be short readings given out ahead of time and there will be some optional writing assignments. In class time will be spent in discussions and in class exercises designed to help flesh out the material and points being made.

The ultimate goal of this course is the help students learn to read material and take in information with an analytical mind, to think more deeply about the material given to them and to develop important critical thinking skills. The aim is also to be sure that the learners are enjoying themselves through fun exercises designed to engage the learners in a fun infused environment while still developing important analytical skills.

Grades are not naturally given, but I am happy to give out feedback or any necessary grading should the learner (or their parents) request it.

Otros detalles

Orientación para padres
We will study historical events, but the readings and materials will not be graphic. Thus, we might consider the Mau Mau uprising, but the writings will not provide graphic details. Rather will provide historical context.
Lista de útiles escolares
Written materials will be given out a week prior to each class. These will not be long and should not take much time to read through. Other materials such as video clips etc may be viewed during class to aid in debate and discussion.
Recursos externos
Los estudiantes no necesitarán utilizar ninguna aplicación o sitio web más allá de las herramientas estándar de Outschool.

I am a human rights lawyer, who has practiced law through the UN around the globe. Now I am a homeschool mom myself and these types of critical thinking skills are vital to our kids and their future. I have seen this first hand, and feel a passion for this material and a great desire to pass it on in as fun a setting as possible.
