16 lessons//16 Weeks
 Week 1
Lesson 1
ABC's and The Five Parameters of Sign Language
We will learn to sign the manual ASL alphabet as well as looking at the five most important parts to every sign.
 Week 2
Lesson 2
Fingerspelling
We will learn what fingerspelling is, as well as how and when to use it.
 Week 3
Lesson 3
Game Day: "Fingerspell It!"
During the course of the game, a word will be sent, privately through the chatbox, to each student. The student will then need to fingerspell that word for the rest of the class. The other students in class will then try to "read" and identify the word that has been fingerspelled. The sign(s) for the word(s) will be taught after they have been fingerspelled.
 Week 4
Lesson 4
Simple Sentence Structure, Greetings & Farewells
We will learn the most basic form of sentence structure in ASL as well as learn some common greetings and farewells.
 Week 5
Lesson 5
Introduction to Numbers and Age
We will learn to sign numbers 0-30 as well as talk about how to sign about age: "How old are you?" "I am __ years old."
 Week 6
Lesson 6
Game Day: "ASL Bingo"
Students will be given individual bingo cards (sent to them at some point during the week before class). Students will either need to print this card out, copy it down onto a blank sheet of paper, or play directly off of their computer screen. Signs will be randomly chosen and signed to students. Students will then mark each sign, as it is signed, on their card until they acheive a BINGO.
 Week 7
Lesson 7
Family Signs
We will learn different family-related signs as well as how gender is visually depicted in American Sign Language.
 Week 8
Lesson 8
Animal Signs
We will learn various animal signs including both domestics and exotics.
 Week 9
Lesson 9
Game Day: "Alphabet Round Robin"
For this game, students will randomly be given a letter of the alphabet and then asked to produce a sign which is connected to a word, starting with that letter. For example, if the student receives the letter "W", they might choose to sign "whale" or "water" or "what".
 Week 10
Lesson 10
Colors and Emotions
We will learn color signs as well as emotion/feeling signs.
 Week 11
Lesson 11
Wh-Face & Wh-Signs
We will learn about the Wh-Face in sign language, how and when it is used as well signs for Wh-Words (question words: who, what, where, when, why & how).
 Week 12
Lesson 12
Game Day: "Two Truth and One Lie"
Students will be asked to prepare three statements about themselves: two of the statements should be true and one should be a lie. They will sign their statements to class. After the statements are translated, which will be done as a class, each student will vote on which statement they think is untrue. It is a great way to get to know more about each other as well as to practice both expressive and receptive signing.
 Week 13
Lesson 13
Time Signs
We will learn various signs relating to time (i.e. Now, today, tomorrow, yesterday, day, week, month, year, days of the week, months of the year).
 Week 14

 Week 15

Final Test Review Game: "ASL Jeopardy"
Our last game day will be a review of all the things we have learned over the course of the last 14 weeks. This will be a prep for the final test the following week.
 Week 16
Lesson 16
Final Test
The final test for this course will take place through the Kahoot! app. Students will not need to have the Kahoot! app downloaded in order to take this test. The test will be administered by me (the teacher). The teacher (I) will be present for the entirety of the test.
  • Learning outcomes will include the following: Demonstrate the use of basic ASL vocabulary and non-manual signals, form very basic sentences and questions, and understand a bit more about Deaf culture and the Deaf community.
I grew up with a Deaf family member. I learned the basics of American Sign Language at a very young age and found it incredibly helpful as I moved through childhood and into adulthood. I could communicate with other children who were clearly frustrated that no one either could or was willing to take the time and make the effort to interact with them. As an adult, I studied American Sign Language in college so that I could better communicate with the many Deaf and hearing impaired members of my community.

Detalles: Grades can be given upon request. This class is and has always been Pass/Fail, however I understand a parent's need for grades and I do keep track of each individual student's work and progress. Grades are largely based on class participation, attendance and performance on the final test.

Handouts will be provided for students throughout the duration of the course.
Please be advised that pronouns and gender distinction are discussed during weeks 5 (personal & possessive pronouns) and 8 (family signs). Pronouns are a part of speech (I, you, he, she, them, we, yours, mine, ours) and these signs must be taught for fluency. In ASL, gender distinction is visual and dictated by the location of a sign. This is also a part of sign lagnuage that must be taught if a student wishes to learn to sign and read signs correctly.

I understand that, for some, these may be sensitive topics, depending on beliefs and ideals. Please understand that I am not talking about how an individual identifies, but rather, discussing the signs for the pronouns "I" "she" "he," etc.

That being said, my ASL courses are inclusive of all individuals. I expect my students to give one another the utmost respect during class and refer to each other using the pronoun(s) with which each student identifies.
