This class will teach the first quarter of Fry's first 100 words. We will study 5 words per week, and meet 2 times per week. First Meeting per Week: Practice the phonics skills needed to decode this week's sight words. (Sight words can be decoded, but often used more advanced phonics skills, such as blends, digraphs, and shwa sounds.) Next, I will introduce each word and demonstrate blending the sounds together. Students will have an opportunity to build the word with letter manipulatives and practice writing the word. Then, we will search for sight words hidden in sentences. Before class ends, we will review all studied sight words in a flashcard format. Optional homework will be assigned. Second Meeting per Week: Review all studied sight words in flashcard format. We will review phonics skills as needed and practice word building. Then, I will call out a word and ask students to spell it from memory (either with letter manipulatives, writing, or spelling aloud). We will play at least one game, such as bingo, before ending. Week 1: the, of, and, a, to Week 2: in, is, you, that, it Week 3: he, was, for, on, are Week 4: as, with, his, they, I Week 5: at, be, this, have, from This class will offer a lot of interaction between learners and the teacher. We will use slides to view the sight words and to demonstrate how to play the games. Students should be familiar with all letters and their basic sounds before enrolling in this class, and be ready to sound out words. This class is a little different than many common approaches to sight words as we are working on both phonics and memorization.
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will apply phonics skills to decode high frequency words, then practice those words until they recognize them by sight.

Lista de útiles escolares
Letter manipulatives such as Montessori moveable alphabet, alphabet magnets, or letter tiles such as from Scrabble or Bananagrams. Bananagrams Jr has lowercase letters. You can also make your own manipulatives with plastic or metal lids from beverage containers. Paper and pencil/crayon/marker or chalkboard/whiteboard. Early writers sometimes do better with a chalkboard. If your child is not ready to write, they may use a sensory tray instead. I will also post printable activities in the classroom.
