This introductory course is open to any student with a desire to learn about the ever-changing world of Music Technology. This course will introduce students to the basics of using a computer for music: musical notation technology, MIDI technology, digital audio technology, and recording studio techniques. At the end of this course students will be able to demonstrate how technology can be used to aid in the recording and presentation of acoustic instruments as well as how electronic music can be produced or recorded through hands-on, real life experiences. Every week students will learn different skills through class instruction and then will have the opportunity to practice through a GarageBand project. Week 1 Intro to GarageBand Creating a new project/tracks Apple Loops Track Effects How do I edit a piece of audio? Week 2 Automation Pan Composition Techniques How do I create a piece of music using loops? Week 3 Science of Sound Amplitude and Frequency EQ, Compression, Reverb, Delay How do I make raw audio files more professional? Week 4 Add/Record Midi Instruments How do I record a midi instrument into GarageBand? Week 5 Podcast recording/editing What are the techniques and structure of a podcast? Week 6 Sound Effects (Direct vs Environmental) Foley Artists How do movies create and record sound effects? Week 7 Introduction Film Music How does film music effect the overall emotion of a film? Week 8 Presentation of film projects How can I use what I learned in this course to advance my own interests?

Student will need to have GarageBand installed on their computer and a pair of headphones. Unfortunately the assignments can not fully be completed on an iPad or iPhone. Students do not need to create an account in GarageBand and the application is offered through the App Store on all apple computers. Students will only compose music using music already installed in the application.

Hello! Thank you for taking the time to visit my page. I am a Band Director and Music Technology teacher with over 9 years of experience teaching students of all ages and in a variety of different settings. I have a K-12 Music Education Degree and a Masters in Music Education. I offer introductory and advanced classes in music technology with a focus on GarageBand. I believe music has the capability to prepare students to be lifelong learnings and consumers of the arts by fostering creativity and promoting critical thinking. Through traditional and nontraditional music classes, I hope to give students the skills they need to pursue their own musical interests.
