The purpose of this course is to provide an introduction to music history from the Romantic period. We will discuss how the transition between the Classical and Romantic Period occurred through musical forms, composers, musical works, and cultural history. The following is a weekly schedule of what will be covered. Learners will be expected to keep a listening journal to record their thoughts on the pieces learned in class. Lieds composed by Schumann and Schubert will be discussed in class. Learners will also be introduced to British and North American Parlour Songs. 𝐖𝐄𝐄𝐊 𝟐: 𝐄𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐑𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜 Learners will be introduced to programmatic music through Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique and Mendelssohn's Overtures. Other topics discussed include chamber and sacred music from the early-middle Romantic period. 𝐖𝐄𝐄𝐊 𝟑: 𝐑𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐏𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐨 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜 Learners will be introduced to the piano music of Mendelssohn, Schumann, Chopin, and Liszt. There will be a listening assignment provided by the instructor. 𝐖𝐄𝐄𝐊 𝟒: 𝐄𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐑𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐎𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚 𝐎𝐮𝐭𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐈𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐲 Learners will develop their knowledge of Bel Canto Opera through the works of Rossini and Bellini. Other composers that will be discussed in class include Meyerbeer and Weber. 𝐖𝐄𝐄𝐊 𝟓: 𝐈𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐎𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚 & 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐫𝐞 Learners will develop their knowledge about musical theatre through Wagner's Tristan and Isolde. They will continue to develop their knowledge of opera through Verdi and Puccini. 𝐖𝐄𝐄𝐊 𝟔: 𝐑𝐮𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐎𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚 Learners will be introduced to Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov along with the development of the operetta in the 19th century through Offenbach and Gilbert & Sullivan. 𝐖𝐄𝐄𝐊 𝟕: 𝐋𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝟏𝟗𝐭𝐡-𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐲 𝐎𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚 Learners will learn about 19th-century instrumental music by Gottschalk, Foster, Sousa, and Beach. Other topics discussed will include classicism in the late Romantic Period by Johannes Brahms. 𝐖𝐄𝐄𝐊 𝟖: 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜 𝐛𝐲 𝐃𝐯𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐤 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐤𝐨𝐯𝐬𝐤𝐲 Learners will be introduced to the instrumental music by Dvorak and Tchaikovsky. Other topics that will be discussed include composers Mahler and Richard Strauss in German Romanticism. 𝐖𝐄𝐄𝐊 𝟗: 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬 Learners will present a final report in class. The prompt with be provided by the instructor. Assignments will be due two days prior to the scheduled meeting to allow the instructor to provide timely feedback to the learner via the Outschool classroom. The assignments are designed to help reinforce the topics learned in each session. While it is recommended to purchase the textbook, the teacher will provide all the materials needed for the learners in this class. This course will use video examples, and assignment explanations, and will provide feedback. Each lesson is a combination of lectures via PowerPoint, listening, and written discussion about the material covered in the lesson. Students will also be able to create and play games like Kahoot! with the instructor of the course. The teacher will also post a question of the week in the classroom to encourage class discussion that will reflect the material that they have learned. Students will complete their assignments in the form of a recording and upload them to the classroom where the instructor will provide feedback to the learner for their work. There will also be different music applications used for the course that will encourage interaction between learners along with the use of Quizlet, Kahoot!, and Edupuzzle.

She is an internationally known linguist, teacher, and professional musician who has taught on four continents. Her passion for service stemmed from her work as an AmeriCorps Vista Fellow.
