This course will explore the music from the Baroque Period. Learners will learn about different musical styles, composers, works, music theory, performance practices, and cultural and intellectual history that were developed and prominent during this period of time. Learners will apply research through written assignments, as well as musical and theoretical skills gained in lower-division music systems and theory classes in analytical assignments. The following is a weekly schedule of the different topics that will be discussed. Upon completion, the following class would be 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜 𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲: 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐝 (Self-Paced). Each lesson is a combination of lectures via PowerPoint, listening, and written discussion about the material covered in the lesson. Students will also complete melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic dictation throughout the course. The teacher will post questions in the classroom to encourage class discussion that will reflect the material that they have learned. Students will complete their ear training assignments in the form of a recording and uploaded them to the classroom where the instructor will provide feedback to the learner for their work. There will be melodic and rhythmic dictations where learners will be interacting with the instructor via video. There will also be different music applications used for the course that will encourage interaction between learners.

Students will gain a deep understanding of key Baroque musical elements, such as monody, basso continuo, and the development of opera, including significant works like L'Euridice.
Through written and analytical assignments, students will develop the ability to critically examine Baroque compositions, focusing on Venetian opera, French and Italian instrumental forms, and their historical and cultural contexts.

What is the Baroque?
There will be in-class introductions along with an in-class discussion of what Baroque is. There will be a listening assignment provided by the instructor.
Lección 2:
Monody and Basso Continuo
Learners will be introduced to the monody and basso continuo. There will be a short composition assignment where learners will provide a short melody that they will provide a basso continuo.
Lección 3:
The Invention of Opera: L'Euridice
Learners will learn about how opera was invented and about the story of L'Euridice. There will be a listening assignment provided by the instructor along with a video presentation.
Lección 4:
Monteverdi and L'Orfea & The Birth of Public Opera: Venetian Opera
Learners will continue learning about how opera has developed along with how Venetian opera was created. There will be a listening assignment provided by the instructor.

Currently serves at the Banting Postdoctoral Fellow (2024-2026) at Concordia University, Montréal, she is also recipient of the Fulbright and Portuguese Science & Technology awards. She is an internationally known linguist, teacher, and professional musician who has taught on four continents. Her passion for service stemmed from her work as an AmeriCorps Vista Fellow. In her spare time, she likes to play with her pet rabbit, Señor Blanco.
