In this single meeting course, students will receive an overview of the extraordinary country of Japan. This is meant to be an introductory level class for anyone interested in Japan. We will focus on geography, culture, and history. From understanding the unique geographical features of Japan, we can make connections to the cultural development of the people of Japan. Some geographical topics we will cover include Japan’s location on the Ring of Fire which leaves the nation vulnerable to volcanoes, earthquakes, and tsunamis. We will touch on Japanese history as we discuss the role of the samurai. Finally, cultural traits we will discuss include food, religion, folklore, and entertainment. We will follow a visually appealing lesson using slides with the goal of stimulating questions and discussion from the learner as we progress in the lecture. Activities will include use of the chat feature in Zoom, whole-group discussion, and will culminate with a Blooket game.
