This is an introduction to equine science that will include topics such as evolution, anatomy, nutrition and horse health. We will learn common terminology and breeds, markings and more! Class 1: evolution/ history / terminology - how did horses change through time? What jobs have they been used for since we have domesticated them? (Students will create a time line of equine evolution, so legal size, or larger white paper and colored pencils will be needed) Also review terms that are commonly used when discussing horses and medical terms often used by the veterinarian that horse owners should know. Students may want to create flash cards for practice terms they don’t know already. (Index cards and a pen/pencil) Class 2: breeds, colors and markings- Students will learn about a variety of breeds, their common uses and how to recognize them based on what they look like. Colors and markings will also be covered. Class 3: anatomy/ nutrition - Understanding equine anatomy is important and in this class students will have a chance to review pony parts and also learn how to create an equine pasta skeleton at home! (A paper plate, a variety of pasta shapes, pipe cleaners, a hot glue gun and sticky labels wilk be needed for this after class project) Additionally, the equine digestive system and feeding of the horse will be discussed with special attention given why understanding the digestive system is key to how we feed our horses. Class 4: horse health - How to regognize a healthy horse, taking vital signs and a basic physical exam video will be shown. Learning what is normal for the horse is important so that we can see when something might be wrong. Vaccines will also be discussed briefly. Additional carefully selected YouTube videos will be added to the online classroom for learners interested in more information on a topic. No homework is required, but some will be recommended for those who would like to complete it.

I love teaching others about horses! My interest in horses began when I was very young and I love to encourage those who have an interest to learn as much as they can about these amazing creatures!
