This course uses an interactive approach to teach equivalent fractions. Learners create visual models by folding paper to show how you could share a "granola bar." Next, they identify equivalent fractions visually using the models. Finally, they learn a process for calculating equivalent fractions. This process involves multiplying by a fraction equal to 1 (e.g., 1/2 (2/2) = 2/4). It's expected that learners already know what a fraction is, the parts of a fraction and what they mean, and understand the concept of multiplication. The materials needed for this course include a dry erase board and marker, or paper and pencil. In addition, the learner will need eight 1" strips of paper - create this by cutting a white sheet of paper into 8 strips the long way. Otherwise, print out the PDF document provided and cut on the dotted lines.
Metas de aprendizaje
Learners walk away from this class conceptually understanding equivalent fractions. They will know that equivalent fractions have the same value, but different sized pieces and therefore a different number of pieces. In addition, they will learn how to use multiplication to calculate equivalent fractions.

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
I teach math and science classes at Outschool for children ages 5 to 12. I'm a former math and science teacher. I taught for almost 10 years in classrooms. I've been homeschooling my own children for the past 2 years and I wrote a math and science homeschooling curriculum that is available for purchase. I have a Ph.D. in math education, which has helped me understand the ins and outs of teaching and learning math. I believe that learning should be fun and engaging! Children need opportunities to build confidence and to experience meaningful challenges. Math is not just about learning skills. It's also about reasoning and thinking. I incorporate skill development, a chance to really understand the math concepts, and fun problem-solving experiences. Something interesting about me is that I played basketball at Colgate University and played professionally overseas in Europe! Today you'll find me playing math card games like SKYJO with my 5 and 6 year old kiddos!
