In this class, I will teach about how orchestra instruments are grouped into "families" based on how an instrument looks, sounds, and is played. The four main families of instruments of the orchestra include: strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. These will be the topics that will be covered: Week #1 (week of June 14): What is an Orchestra? + Instrument Family Overview + The String Family Week #2 (week of June 21): The Woodwind Family Week #3 (week of June 28): The Brass Family Week #4 (week of July 5): The Percussion Family Week #5 (week of July 19): Benjamin Britten's "Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra" Class will be structured as a mix of teacher explanation, class discussion and question/answers, listening examples, and powerpoint. No previous experience or knowledge of music required!
Metas de aprendizaje
In this class, students will learn to categorize and identify instruments by orchestral family (string, woodwind, brass, and percussion). They will be able to recognize an instrument by its construction, its playing method, its unique sound, and its similarity to other members of that particular orchestral instrument family.

Hi! My name is Chris Landi. I currently teach general music to students in preschool through 4th grade. I also have experience teaching instrumental music to students in 4th grade through 12th grade, particularly concert band, jazz band, and marching band. I currently teach private percussion and piano lessons. I love to listen to, compose, and perform music on a regular basis. I have a passion for sharing my love of music with people of all ages!
On Outschool, I am looking to teach music classes related to learning an instrument, learning how to read music, learning the basics of music theory, and exploring the evolution of classical music since antiquity!
I strongly believe that the teaching-learning process should be a collaborative one between teacher and student. As a teacher, I see myself as a guide to help a student navigate their own learning journey. Using a variety of teaching philosophies and instructional strategies/materials is just one way I serve as a facilitator for students' learning. I very much seek to incorporate students' interests and questions into the teaching-learning process. I can't wait to get started teaching you!
Other hobbies include reading, swimming, running, photography, and rooting for Philadelphia sports teams (Eagles, Phillies, Sixers, and Flyers)!!
