This ongoing course will cover various families and species of common and rare insect species. Each class meeting we will discuss 5 different insects and their common name, scientific name, identifying characteristics, and natural environments. Each class will have a title slide and a slide with common entomology terms to know for the course. These two slides will remain the same from week to week. Every week 5 slides will be shown each showcasing an insect species. More slides will be shown with supplemental photos for further visual examples. Students will be assessed by a 5 slide quiz with short answers in the chat feature. 3 photos of insects will be quizzed for common and species names, followed by 2 identification questions from material covered in class. 1. Week 1 Janaury 6: Eastern Tiger Swallowtail- Papilio glaucus, Black Swallowtail- Papilio polyxenes, Zebra Swallowtail- Eurytides marcellus, Spicebush Swallowtail- Papilio troilus, and Old World Swallowtail- Papilio machaon 2. Week 2 Janaury 13: Chinese Mantis- Tenodera sinensis, Orchid Mantis- Hymenopus coronatus, Texas Unicorn Mantis- Pseudovates chlorophaea, Ghost Mantis- Phyllocrania paradoxa, and Carolina Mantis- Stagmomantis carolina 3. Week 3 Janaury 20: Asian Lady Beetle- Harmonia axyridis, 22-Spot Lady Beetle- Psyllobora vigintiduopunctata, Kidney-spot Lady Beetle- Chilocorus renipustulatus, Ten-spotted Lady Beetles- Adalia decempunctata, Orange Lady Beetle- Halyzia sedecimguttata 4. Week 4 Janaury 27: May Beetle- Phyllophaga spp., Emerald Ash Borer- Agrilus planipennis, Soybean Aphid- Aphis glycines, Japanese Beetle- Popillia japonica, Spotted Lanternfly- Lycorma delicatula 5. Week 5 February 3: Brown marmorated stink bug- Halyomorpha halys, Bed bugs- Cimex lectularius, springtails- Orchesella cincta, German cockroach- Blattella germanica, silverfish- Lepisma saccharinum

Pencil and paper will be necessary for note-taking. Anything is okay, though having a composition or ruled spiral notebook for this ongoing class will help your student stay organized week to week. The price ranges for these, they are typically anywhere from $1-$3. Notes can also be taken on the slide printouts to be covered provided before class every week.
