Experiencia de clase

It is strongly encouraged to have taken Semester 1 of this course, or to have previous IEW experience.

This class covers Formal Essay Models from Unit 8 of the Structure and Style method from the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW). Students MUST own a copy of Medieval History-Based Writing Lessons Student Workbook. https://iew.com/shop/products/medieval-history-based-writing-lessons-student-book-only

This unit combines the skills learned in Unit 6 (notes from multiple sources) and Unit 7 (intro and conclusion paragraphs) to create a formal research essay about Leonardo da Vinci, or another notable person from the Renaissance. There are no new stylistic techniques or vocabulary words for this section, so the students can focus fully on this new structure. However, they will continue to use the stylistic elements they learned up to this point.

Week 1: Knights, Part 3 (Lesson 25) -- The students will need to have access to their paragraphs about knights from lessons 17-18, as we will be adding introduction and conclusion paragraphs to turn these paragraphs into an essay.

Week 2: The Renaissance, Part 1 (Lesson 26)-- The students will need several outside sources about Leonardo da Vinci (or another artist or scientist of the Renaissance) as we begin this lesson. I will model note-taking from several sources and we will create key word outlines about Leonardo da Vinci. The students will complete research and outlining of 2-3 paragraphs.

Week 3: The Renaissance, Part 2 (Lesson 27)--- I will model intro and conclusion paragraphs for Leonardo da Vinci. The students will complete their paragraphs from the previous weeks and create outlines for their intro and conclusion paragraphs, and write their rough drafts.

Week 4: Pulling it all together! We'll review all the stylistic techniques, get a refresher how to create a bibliography, and I'll answer any questions the kids have. They will create their final draft and turn it in after this class is finished.
