Wonders of Science Writing Lessons: Part 1 of 2 (15 Weeks) Course Overview: This course, based on the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) methods, allows students to explore scientific topics while honing their writing skills. Students will learn to take notes, retell stories, summarize references, write from pictures, compose essays, and more, through IEW’s structured units. Vocabulary enhancement and stylistic techniques are incorporated into each lesson. No prior IEW experience is required. Required Textbook: Wonders of Science Writing Lessons Student Book Class Structure: • Weekly review of lesson material • In-class discussions and outlines • Weekly writing assignments • Vocabulary drills and quizzes • Assignments submitted via Google Classroom • Feedback and scoring based on lesson checklists Syllabus: Week 1 - Introduction to Style: Unit 1, Lesson 1 • Topic: Dead Ants • Content: Note Making and Outlines • Activities: Introduction to course, creating outlines, vocabulary words. Week 2 - Unit 2, Lesson 2 • Topic: Honey Bees • Content: Writing from Notes • Activities: Using -ly adverbs, vocabulary words, vocabulary quiz, number rules, selecting an editor. Week 3 - Lesson 3 • Topic: Bombardier Beetles • Activities: Note making and outlines, vocabulary words. Week 4 - Lesson 4 • Topic: Monarch Migration • Activities: Applying the title rule, incorporating who/which clauses, vocabulary words. Week 5 - Unit 3, Lesson 5 • Topic: Daedalus and Icarus • Content: Retelling Narrative Stories: Story Sequence Chart • Activities: Using story sequence charts, vocabulary words. Week 6 - Lesson 6 • Topic: Archimedes • Activities: Identifying and using strong verbs, avoiding banned verbs, quotations, vocabulary words. Week 7 - Lesson 7 • Topic: Jack and the Beanstalk • Activities: Writing using because clauses, vocabulary words, vocabulary quiz. Week 8 - Lesson 8 • Topic: Rumpelstiltskin • Activities: Avoiding more banned verbs, vocabulary words. Week 9 - Unit 4, Lesson 9 • Topic: Steam Engines • Content: Summarizing a Reference: Writing 1-Paragraph Reports • Activities: Review vocabulary, applying the topic/clincher rule. Week 10 - Lesson 10 • Topic: Model T Ford • Activities: Using quality adjectives, avoiding banned adjectives, vocabulary words. Week 11 - Lesson 11 • Topic: Flight • Content: Writing 2-Paragraph Reports • Activities: Introduction to www.asia.b clauses, vocabulary words. Week 12 - Lesson 12 • Topic: Spacesuits • Activities: Using #2 prepositional openers, vocabulary words. Week 13 - Unit 5, Lesson 13 • Topic: Meteorite • Content: Writing from Pictures • Activities: Creating narratives from pictures, vocabulary words, vocabulary quiz. Week 14 - Lesson 14 • Topic: Message in a Bottle • Activities: Using #3 -ly adverb openers, vocabulary words.
