New to Outschool? Use code ReginaA20 to save $20 on this class! Give me four weeks and I will introduce your learner to the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) curriculum. This class will introduce the learner to four out of nine units of IEW. Throughout the units learners will have a quick glimpse into IEW structure and style techniques. While writing compositions learners will be instructed on how to add certain dress-ups and sentence openers to their writing. This is an introductory class therefore all dress-ups and sentence openers may not be covered in class. Yes, IEW is more involved than what your learner will be introduced to. But why waste time on a writing technique which may not be a good fit for your learner. Here is the opportunity for your learner to try out the IEW curriculum in four short weeks. After four weeks of writing with Mrs. Moffett learners may find a new love for writing. The learner will be introduced to: Week 1 - Unit 1: Note Making and Outlines and Unit 2: Writing from Notes Structure – Basic paragraph Style – IEW dress-ups are descriptive words which enhance a sentence. Dress-ups used in a sentence are underlined by the learner. Week 2 - Unit 3: Retelling a Narrative Story Structure – Unit 3 requires students to extract key ideas from a story and then organize that information into a 3-paragraph story. Each paragraph has a distinct purpose. The first focuses on characters and setting, the second on conflict or problem, and the third on climax and resolution. Style – IEW dress-ups are descriptive words which enhance a sentence. Dress-ups used in a sentence are underlined by the learner. Week 3 - Unit 4: Summarizing a Reference Structure – Unit 4 focuses on report writing. Students read a source text about a specific subject and find various topics within the subject to write about. Style – IEW dress-ups are descriptive words which enhance a sentence. Dress-ups used in a sentence are underlined by the learner. Style - Sentence openers are descriptive words which begin a sentence. Learners indicate that a sentence starts with a sentence opener by placing the appropriate number in front of the sentence. Week 4 - Unit 7: Inventive Writing * Note: learners will be introduced to the lay-out of a 5-paragraph composition. Structure – Unit 7 There is no source text. Students create a KWO for body paragraphs by asking good questions. Students should write five to seven facts to support the topic by asking questions about the topic. The ability to ask questions and develop answers is the core skill required for all inventive writing. Style – The IEW dress-ups are descriptive words, phrases, or clauses added to a sentence. To indicate that a dress-up has been added to a sentence, students must underline it. Style - Sentence openers are descriptive words which begin a sentence. Learners indicate that a sentence starts with a sentence opener by placing the appropriate number in front of the sentence. ***To ease the stress of coming up with a topic to re-write students will be given a story to rewrite. How the teacher will present the information: *This class will consist of the teacher reading a story and presenting information. ***Each class meeting will introduce the learner to a different unit.
