Welcome to my class! I’m a third-generation teacher who was homeschooled from kindergarten through 12th grade, and was always taught using the IEW method. Growing up surrounded by educators, I was inspired to pursue the same path. After earning my BA from NCSU in 2023, I became a registered instructor with the Institute for Excellence in Writing in 2024. Since then, I’ve been teaching both English Language Arts and Spanish. I’d love to help your children discover the magic of the IEW method and Spanish! What's Your Teaching Style? I believe in a balanced, student-centered approach where active participation and collaboration are key to success. What Will Be Taught? In this course, students will focus on developing key writing skills that will serve as the foundation for strong academic and creative writing. We will cover: Summarizing complex ideas from multiple sources Crafting clear and engaging reports and stories Learning stylistic techniques to enhance writing (such as the "because" clause, www.asia clause, and quality adjectives) Expanding vocabulary and applying it in context Structuring and outlining ideas coherently Writing from pictures and narratives, refining retelling skills Fusing information from multiple references into cohesive paragraphs What Topics Will You Cover? Summarizing Skills: How to distill key information from a text or reference and summarize it clearly and concisely. Writing Stylistic Techniques: Introduction of various tools like the "because" clause, www.asia clause, and vocabulary techniques to improve sentence variety and depth. Writing from Pictures: Creating compelling narratives from a sequence of images, developing storytelling techniques. Advanced Vocabulary and Verbs: Identifying and replacing weak verbs, incorporating descriptive adjectives, and enhancing language precision. Outlining and Organizing Ideas: Structuring information into key word outlines and organizing thoughts before writing. Combining Sources: Fusing multiple references and ideas into one coherent summary or report. How Is Your Class Structured? Two Sessions per Week (30 Minutes Each): The class is designed to meet twice weekly for 30 minutes each, providing focused sessions with clear learning objectives. Engaging with New Content: Each lesson introduces a new topic or writing technique, allowing students to build on what they’ve learned previously. Interactive Writing Exercises: Each class includes time for students to practice writing with guided support. Homework assignments or in-class writing exercises will be given to apply the skills covered in the lesson. Review and Reinforcement: We will regularly review vocabulary and stylistic techniques, with quizzes and in-class discussions to reinforce learning. How Will You Teach? My teaching approach is based on clear, structured lessons with interactive elements. I focus on guiding students through each stage of the writing process, from outlining to drafting, using active learning strategies. Lecture: Each lesson will begin with a short lecture or explanation of the day’s topic and skill. Demonstration: I will demonstrate how to apply writing techniques through examples, showing students the transformation of a simple sentence or paragraph into something more complex and stylistically refined. Interactive Activities: After the lecture, students will participate in guided exercises (like writing, brainstorming, or creating outlines) where they will apply what they’ve learned. This allows for immediate feedback and clarification. Discussion: Students will have opportunities to discuss their ideas with me and the class, sharing their work and receiving constructive feedback. Quizzes and Games: Periodic quizzes will help reinforce vocabulary and stylistic techniques. In addition, I incorporate occasional games or interactive group activities to keep the lessons engaging. My style includes: Direct Instruction: I provide clear explanations and examples to ensure students understand the concepts. Supportive and Encouraging: I provide lots of feedback and create a welcoming, low-pressure environment where students feel comfortable experimenting with their writing. Collaborative Learning: Encouraging students to share ideas and work together in brainstorming sessions or peer reviews to foster community and learning. Interactive: Engaging students through writing exercises, discussions, and challenges that prompt them to apply new skills in real-time.
