Can you get to the bottom of a mysterious massive fish-killing? In this online class, you will be an ichthyologist working as an environmental investigator to solve this mystery. You will learn about: - oxygen levels in water and its impact on fish - energy flow in an aquatic food web - different trophic levels of the ecosystem You will perform a fish paper necropsy to investigate how the fish’s physiological responses can shed some light on the cause behind the fish death. Then you will analyze the level of dissolved oxygen by gathering data from fish and water samples to help test your hypothesis. (Almost all activities will only require the workbook provided and no fish will be harmed in this course) In this investigation, you will have to gather several pieces of information that you will need to figure out what caused the massive fish death. Will you be able to put the pieces together to solve the mystery? Course Syllabus: Students will be provided a workbook which will to help guide students through the material. The classes will be 40% lecture and 60% experiment/activity. Week 1: - Introduction to the Mystery - Sample Collection - Initial Hypothesis Week 2: - Ecosystem Survey Week 3: - Paper Fish Necropsy Week 4: - Water Sample Analysis (Oxygen Levels) Week 5: - Water Sample Analysis (Phytoplankton Identification) Week 6: - Spectrophotometry - Conclusion to the Mystery
