This is a 4-week Multi-Day book club covering the popular "I Survived" series. We will start with the book "I Survived Japanese Tsunami, 2011" by Lauren Tarshis. We will meet once a week to read and discuss the chapters we are reading in class. Each student will get an opportunity to read out loud in class if they can independently read without much help from the teacher. The teacher will not do any of the reading if there are independent readers in the class to keep the pace up to finish the book in 4 weeks. If a student wants to join the class to listen to the story being read by the other students or teacher, that is absolutely allowed. I did open a class where the teacher reads to the student who is a great fan of the "I Survived Series" books. We discuss the story elements in each book covered in this class. If a student needs help with the words, the teacher will help guide them. The teacher is hoping to impart a love for reading. The teacher loves to get the students excited about learning by reading one of the teacher's favorite historical fiction book series. We will fill out a Story Elements Sheet during the book reads. We will fill in the following for each book and discuss each book as we read them in class: 1. Setting 2. Characters 3. Problem-Conflict 4. Plot 5. Is this fiction or nonfiction? As a former media coordinator, this series was one of the most popular books checked out of the library by my students. The books appeal to reluctant readers and advanced readers. The books are filled with action and suspense to keep the reader engaged in this popular series. The book club will allow the students to independently read or just listen to the book being read by the other students or the teacher if no independent readers can keep up the pace to finish in 4 weeks. We will go over the story elements in every class. The discussion will be guided by the teacher. The books are based on important historical events that took place in our country of United States and around the world. We will discuss the difference between fiction, and non-fiction. What makes these books historical fiction? We will discuss the setting, characters, problems/conflicts, and the theme/plot of the story. The teacher is hoping to share a love for reading and learning about history. The "I Survived Series" is full of information and events that took place in history. Students will need the books for this class as they will take turns reading out loud if they can read independently. The books can be purchased rather inexpensively by getting paperback copies through Amazon or they may be checked out of a public or school library. Some students have used a Kindle Reader to read the book. These books are a wonderful collection to own in a home library and are exciting to read more than one time. I will be adding books to the list as I finish putting the necessary details for approval from Outschool. I will relist the class after the 4 weeks to start the next book which will be added to the list. After each book, you will need to re-enroll for the next multi-day book we will read. 1. "I Survived The Japanese Tsunami, 2011" by Lauren Tarshis January 11-Feb. 2 2. "I Survived The Joplin Tornado, 2011" by Lauren Tarshis Feb. 16-March 9 3.

Orientación para padres
As a former media coordinator-librarian, the "I Survived Series" books written by Lauren Tarshis, were in all our media centers and can be found in public libraries. These books were checked out by hundreds of my students from grades first-fifth grade. I had to order 2- copies of every title as they were the most popular series we had in the media center.
Parents will have to make the decision if these books are a fit for their children to read. Many children have no problem with the details in these books as they are much less graphic than what children see on television and the news if they watch and are exposed to this media.
Accelerated Reader AR Book Find rates this book, "I Survived The Joplin Tornado, 2011", as MG with a book level of 5.1

Hello Parents and Caregivers!
I am very excited to be with Outschool and I would like to tell you a little about myself. I am honored that you took the time to read this information and are considering entrusting your learner in my classes. I taught in public schools for 27 years and for the last 3 years I have been teaching students ESL online all over the world. I am a certified and licensed teacher with a BS in Elementary Education and a concentration in early childhood. I taught all subjects in elementary classes K-6 but for more years in kindergarten-2nd grades. After I received my Master's Degree in Library Science and Information Skills, for the last 18 years in public education, I taught all grade levels from Preschool- 5th-grade. The students were taught reading and information skills, Internet Safety, and all about books. I checked out hundreds of books weekly while I was the media specialist-librarian.
I am certified and hold a TESOL Certificate from an International known school. I started working with English as Second Language (ESL) students when the university I attended allowed me to travel over a thousand miles to McAllen, Texas to do three weeks of student teaching in a bilingual school setting. I was able to teach many afterschool and summer programs with ESL students in the public school setting.
I am a patient and kind teacher and I love to praise and congratulate the students on all their successes in class. I endeavor to establish an atmosphere in my classroom that provides all students the following: they feel loved, and safe, and are with a teacher who sincerely cares about their education and learning. I have high expectations for all students. I do not put a lid on their learning and I try to take them as far as I can in my classes. I have witnessed many of my 3 and 4-year-olds after they complete my Preschool-Kindergarten Prep class, excel in their reading.
I love to teach children and share my passion for learning with these precious students. In my classes, the students will be involved in fun and engaging activities I have created and prepared. Whatever age group of children I am teaching, I try to instill in students a love for learning by creating an environment that is exciting and fun!
I have created the following classes with your children in mind! For a beginner reader who knows most letters and sounds, I recommend taking my ongoing courses in the following order starting with the first class below the Preschool and Kindergarten Preparation Class, unless this is the class you are looking for: (Feel free to copy and paste the class information below or you can go directly to the class links).
