Is your student a fan of the creepy and the macabre? Do they love all things spooky and scary? Do they dream of being the next Stephen King, but could use a little guidance on how to get there? Are you looking for ways to help them improve their writing skills through practice? Join us in this Ongoing horror fiction writing club designed to engage reluctant and experienced writers alike through weekly prompt-based writing activities. Each week, I provide students with one-sentence writing prompts. Using these prompts as the first sentence, students will spend class time writing a 100-word short story (sometimes referred to as a drabble, flash fiction, or short-short fiction). We work in short, timed intervals with regular check-ins, during which time we will discuss elements of writing—such as imagery, symbolism, dialogue, and establishing an authorial voice—that relate to the specific prompts and the stories students are writing. At the end of each round of writing, students have the option to share their writing with their peers through screen share or by reading the piece aloud. Sharing is not required, but is encouraged to help students gain confidence in their writing. Students also have the option to share their weekly writing directly with me (through Outschool) or by posting to the classroom page. Please note that AI-generated or enhanced stories are not allowed in this class. Work should be original and written by a single human author (you!) unless the prompt is specifically collaborative in nature.
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will engage in regular horror writing practice to improve their command of written language and strive towards mastery of the horror genre. Writing from multiple prompts in rapid succession helps generate story ideas that can be developed into longer works.

Orientación para padres
Content of prompts will be age-appropriate, and students will be reminded each week to warn for any gory or disturbing content, but experience has shown me that even benign prompts sometimes result in intense writing that may contain gore or other frightening elements. Please be realistic in your assessment of your learner's comfort level with horror.
As with any horror writing class, parents should be aware that some students find certain content more frightening or disturbing. If your student has particular fears or phobias, I encouraged you to reach out to me with them and I will avoid those topics in prompts. I cannot guarantee that students in the class won't touch on these topics in their writing, however, so please be available to provide support to your student as needed.
Please be aware that I will not accept plagiarized or AI-generated work. "Plagiarized work" refers to the use of text in part or in full written by another writer. "AI-generated work" refers to any writing generated via any large language model (LLM) such as ChatGPT. LLMs are built using the scraped date of others' work, and the use of LLM does not teach or enhance writing or editing skills. Learners submitted plagiarized or identifiably AI-generated work will be given a warning, and then withdrawn from the class on a second offense. Work should be original and written exclusively by the learner.
Lista de útiles escolares
Students should have access to a word processing program (such as Word or Google Docs) or have a notebook/paper and writing implements ready at the beginning of class. I encourage the use of a word processing program for ease of sharing.

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
Maestría desde Kennesaw State University
I have been writing and publishing horror for nearly 18 years, including short fiction works and content for horror tabletop roleplaying games. I have mentored young writers entering the horror writing industry, many of whom I have watched develop into successful, productive writers paid to work within the genre. I have taught additional writing classes on Outschool that deal with horror, apocalyptic, and dystopian fiction since January of 2019.
