Here is a brief overview of how the class will be taught:

Week 1:
Meeting 1: Skeletal System - What is the purpose of our skeletal system? What types of bones are in our body, and what do our bones do? We will also briefly discuss what happens when a bone is fractured and what happens when our bones don't have proper nutrients.

Meeting 2: Muscular System - Why do we need muscles? What are the types of muscles, and can we control them all? We will also discuss what it means to sprain an pull a muscle, and what causes us to get muscle cramps.

Week 2:
Meeting 3: Nervous System - What organs are associated with the nervous system? How do our senses work? We will also take a look at what happens when the nervous system does not work properly.

Meeting 4: Endocrine System - A look at endocrine glands and what each gland does for the human body. Students will take a look at some case studies and we will discuss which hormones are responsible for things like excessive weight gain, puberty, sleeping, falling in love, etc.

Week 3:
Meeting 5: Integumentary System - An overview of the body's largest organ, and how it helps us regulate warmth. We will also discuss how pimples are formed and what makes tattoos permanent.

Meeting 6: Immune System - The components of blood and the role it plays in our body. We will discuss how the body heals itself when we are injured and when bacteria, allergens, and viruses enter our body.

Week 4:
Meeting 7: Cardiovascular System - We will follow the pathway of blood through the heart and how our blood becomes oxygenated. There will be a discussion on the difference in a heart attack and a stroke, and why it's important for our body to maintain proper blood pressure.

Meeting 8: Respiratory System - Why does our body need oxygen? A discussion on how the body respirates, and some conditions like asthma that cause people to have breathing issues. We will also look at what makes us sneeze and cough.

Week 5:
Meeting 9: Digestive System - Follow food from the time it enters the mouth until waste leaves the body. We will also discuss why we burp, fart, get nauseous, have acid reflux, and get diarrhea.

Meeting 10: Urinary System - Why do we pee and sweat? We will discuss how the excretory organs help us maintain pH, water, and salt balance in our bodies. We will talk about what causes kidney stones, why doctors make you pee in a cup, and why some people have to undergo dialysis.

Week 6:
Meeting 11: Female Reproductive System - What is the purpose of menstruating? A discussion on the organs of female reproduction, the hormones females use to grow and sexually mature, and what happens when those hormones are out of whack.

Meeting 12: Male Reproductive System - An overview of the organs of the male reproductive system. We will discuss how males grow and become sexually mature, and what happens when those hormones are out of whack.

Within each system, we will go over the structures therein, and how the system is an integral part of how our body operates. I will provide a diagram of each body system for the student to use as reference during each meeting.

Orientación para padres
Anatomically correct terms will be used throughout the lessons, and we will view diagrams of body systems. I will not be showing real pictures of reproductive organs, but I will discuss uses of the reproductive organs (i.e. the vaginal canal is where a penis is inserted during intercourse, as well as where a baby exits during childbirth.) I am an anatomy teacher and I'm used to some crazy questions. I will answer any questions the students have at any time from a scientific standpoint.
Lista de útiles escolares
I will supply diagrams for students to print prior to the class.
