Cómo escribir un análisis retórico de tu película favorita

I'm an English professor, and one of the skills that students need to have before coming to college is how to write a rhetorical analysis. This kind of writing requires you to understand the concepts of author, audience, text, and context. Movies are a great way to learn how to conduct a rhetorical analysis of any other text, including novels, essays, articles, and political speeches. 

In this 4-week class, students will learn about each of the key elements of a rhetorical analysis, using popular movies as a way of understanding texts. 

Movies we will likely discuss include: The Harry Potter series, Elf, Frozen, Trolls, Toy Story, Jumanji (original and remake), Home Alone, and the Neverending Story. Students do not have to have seen all the movies to participate, but it is helpful if they have some familiarity with popular children's films. Students will also be able to discuss the movies that they love. 

Week 1: What is a rhetorical analysis? Why are movies a great way to practice rhetorical analysis skills? Focus on Text/Logos.
Week 2: Focus on Audience/Pathos and Context/Kairos.
Week 3: Focus on Author/Ethos. Assign final paper, which is a 500 word rhetorical analysis of a film of the student's choice.
Week 4: Final paper is due. Course wrap-up. What can you do now that you know how to conduct a rhetorical analysis?
After the class: I will evaluate your papers and give you feedback.
