***If there are no open sections, please check out my awesome flex version: https://outschool.com/classes/how-to-train-your-hamster-W9VOTwWg?usid=qpQc8Nx2&signup=true&utm_campaign=share_activity_link *** In this class, students will learn basic training techniques for handling their hamsters. One of the most frequent questions and concerns about having a pet hamster is holding/handling them. We will learn about simple techniques and tips to aid with this. The class will begin with very brief introductions to ensure plenty of time for the course material and questions. For the presentation of information and instruction, a slideshow will be used as it will have written instruction, images and photos. Hamsters are little creatures who sleep a lot... They are not always available during class times, so these videos carefully and meticulously created are great ways to still showcase the skills taught in class. These videos will include Archie the hamster and the teacher demonstrating the content. During this time, students are invited to ask plenty of questions and to take notes if needed. A downloadable worksheet will be available upon enrollment. Training and learning to handle hamsters takes practice over time. It can be easier for some hamsters than others so the material learned in this class is meant to be taken and then practiced. The classroom for the course is available for follow up questions. *Students are encouraged to attend class without hamster initially but are welcome to at the end of class to practice. However, the expectation is that the knowledge learned here is to be taken and practiced outside of class. Handling a hamster takes building trust and practice over time and won't be perfect in one day. Some hamsters are easier to train and handle than others.* Some prior knowledge about hamsters may be helpful, but is not required. My class "All About Pets: Hamsters" may be a good place to begin, if needed.

Hello there! My name is Meri Sue Michalak, or Ms. M, and I teach classes with the intention of developing life-long, confident and independent learners. Whether that be through my fun social clubs, writing courses or private tutoring, the goal is to give students the tools they need to succeed in being their absolute BEST self. I believe that at the root of teaching is not just about presenting curriculum or hitting learning goals; it's developing a child as a whole. You will find that I am extremely personable and engaging with all of my students. I believe that every child deserves an equitable learning experience so I always take care in developing courses that serve all learning styles. I have 10+ years of experience in the childcare and education field. From Preschool Music Teacher, After-School Care Site Director to Private Elementary Tutor, I have a well-rounded professional background. I also have a Bachelors degree in Interdisciplinary Studies, EC-8 and I hold a Teaching Certificate for EC-8th grade. One of my favorite things about working in this field are the relationships I've built with families and kiddos. Many of my students are ones I've known for years and watched grow into themselves.
You can find me in Austin, Texas (keepin' it weird!) with my husband MJ, preschooler Maxine, and two doggies Luke and Willie. I love cooking, baking (and tending to my sourdough!), writing, reading, watching a good TV series and spending time with friends & family.
I hope to meet you soon! Please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions. I love to chat with families about their specific needs so I can accommodate to the best of my ability.
