The class will include references from the film demonstrating the different types of science (descriptive, experimental, investigative) and will discuss and interact with each other about what they are seeing. They will share stories about how they have used similar strategies to learn about the world around them and will come away realizing that science is really all about problem solving. It is key that students have viewed the movie prior to this class. Parent guidance and discussion questions for the movie are included in class documentation. This class is intended to stand alone as an introduction to the process and method of science, but if students want to delve deeper, I encourage them to join the flex class "The Science of Dragons" which includes several weeks of experiments, activities, and additional videos covering science topics related to biology, ecology, genetics, and behavior.
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will learn about independent and dependent variables, the 3 types of scientific investigations, how real scientists keep journals, and how the scientific method works (and sometimes when it doesn't).
Otros detalles
Orientación para padres
The students should have watched at least the first movie, although we often discuss things that happen in the other movies as well, especially during the open guided discussion. It is highly recommended that you view and discuss the movie with your child beforehand so that discussion can continue after this class.
Lista de útiles escolares
Class resources are provided, including a referenced discussion list for parents to use while watching the movie with their children and related science activities to use as follow up to student questions.

I have been a public school teacher for 14 years and have watched How to Train Your Dragon approximately 14,823 times with my 5 and 8 year old children. I have used this movie for almost 10 years now to teach students how amazing the different types of science can be, and how the scientific method is not always as clear cut as it seems.
