Experiencia de clase

Grado de EE. UU. 2 - 5
In this course, students will experience science and reading all-in-one! Students will encounter live worms over several sessions as we seek to determine things like which soil is best for worms? Do worms like light? Would they rather be wet or dry?
Students will be asked to read specific chapters before class the following week. The chapters in this book are on the shorter side, so don't be discouraged if it seems like a lot! There will be an activity that we will do together to conquer reading comprehension. I encourage discussion and sharing in my classes and often I will ask students what they liked best, what they would change in the story, or how they would have responded. Students will not be asked to read the book in class.

**if you do not see a time and day that works for you, please message me**

Week 1 - Students will read chapters 1-6 of the book before class. We will take a look at the characters introduced in the book with the reading comprehension activity, make observations of the live worms using a chart, and wrap it up with predictions about the upcoming chapters for the next week.

Week 2 - Students will read chapters 7-12 of the book before class. This lesson we will investigate some vocabulary, create a friendship worm discussing character traits making a good friend, and conduct an experiment to see which soil (sand, topsoil, or clay) the worms prefer.

Week 3 - Students will read chapters 13-18 of the book before class. This week we will look at many different types of worms and compare them to the worms they have seen in class. We will create a fake recipe for fried worms, experiment with straw tissue paper worms, and do an activity on the food web of worms.

Week 4 - In this class, we will spend more time focusing on the science as we will start to research what makes a good worm environment, looking at the regions where different worms survive, and get a glimpse of the worm life cycle. Students will read chapters 19-24 before class. We will incorporate the reading comprehension with an activity and science lesson. We will also play a little charades with our imaginary worm recipes!

Week 5 - Students will read chapters 25-30 before class. We will talk about soil, temperature, and moisture for the worms after previously discussing the best habitat/environment where worms would live. Our experiment this week will be measuring the temperature of 3 different types of soil and determining which is best for the worms. We will practice summarizing the chapters and sequencing events in the book.

Week 6 - We will end our class with a WORM PARTY! We will celebrate our successful completion of reading the book by enjoying a dessert, creating/decorating a worm book mark, and a discussion of the final chapters.

Hi! My name is Kristi and I am so happy you ventured over to my science learning lab!

My goal is for students to have fun, maybe get messy, and gain a love for science! My teaching style is interactive and hands-on as I try to bring science to life. My classes work well for the kinesthetic learner.
You will find that most of my classes have a hands-on component to complement the learning experience and my presentations are very visual.

I do my very best to keep prices lower than average as I understand how quickly classes add up for parents. Keeping the prices lower also helps parents as there are material lists for experiments and activities. However, almost every class that I have has a coupon! Please reach out if you need assistance.

When I am not teaching I love to spend time with my daughter outside, gardening, raising chicks, and learning new skills. My goal is to combine some of my hobbies while teaching.

I have been teaching environmental science to students in pre-k through 12th grade for over 12 years. I have taught in various settings including outdoors, in classrooms, and online. I currently run my own business developing and delivering science lessons and custom curriculums to students in school settings, early learning centers, scouts, libraries, and more! I received my B.A.s in Environmental Science and Sociology in 2016 and my M.S. in Resilient and Sustainable Communities in 2019.
