Whether your learner is a future content creator, scholar, journalist, comic writer, or novelist, learning how to use someone else's work without directly copying it all part of being a creative writer.

In this one-time class, your learner will attempt to outsmart plagiarism detection software by using correct citation and creative writing skills to paraphrase an existing piece of writing. What we'll summarize could be anything - a paragraph from Harry Potter, a summary of a Marvel movie, an article about a newly discovered dinosaur, or something else. We'll look at a different piece of writing in each class meeting, which means learners can repeat this class as many times as they want!

This class is formatted for both solo work and group participation. Learners will write their own summary of a short article that I will provide. We will then share our summaries and work together to create a class summary. A plagiarism checker will check our work to see how original our class summary really is!

Skills practiced in this class include how to:
Cite a source in MLA or APA format
Paraphrase an author's ideas
Write a summary using unique phrasing
Write original content based on a source

This class is repeatable - each section will look at a different piece of writing. Learners are welcome to attend as many sessions as they would like.

I am a professional historian and researcher with specializations in cultural and music history, European history, and Classics. I have worked on college admissions boards vetting application essays, edited papers for graduate and post-graduate researchers, and have taught Bibliography and humanities research courses. I am a very thorough editor with an eye for correct grammar, tonal and colloquial accuracy (using the correct tone based on the writing task), and fact checking. I focus on teaching students how to effectively edit their own work rather than simply telling them what to change.
