Cómo ser adulto (educación financiera)

How do I pay my taxes? What are checks? Why is the APR on this credit card 40% (and also what is APR)?
Answer all these questions and more in this class.

In this class, students will learn how to manage their finances. Students will keep a running record of all of the money coming in and out of their budgets. How will the budget be set? Well, students will spend the first day of class researching entry level salaries for a job they might like to have, as well as the cost for an apartment and rental, in the location of their choosing. Students will roleplay as if they just got a job and moved out of their parents house for the first time. Students will be given a sheet to track everything. 

Each day will look like this:
-Introduce a financial life skill
-Discuss how it is used and why
-Answer any questions
-Refer to how our fictional financial situation is going. Go over any questions/hurdles
-Pull an "oh snap" card- these cards are real life situations that young adults encounter- such as minor injuries, wedding parties, and more.

Though each class will focus on something specific, we will discuss budgeting and saving throughout. 

Students are expected to look at their finances daily throughout the course. They should record their real life expenses (such as coffee purchases, going out to eat, cell phone bill) even if someone else paid on their behalf (such as a carer.)
Students will have to do some basic math throughout class- feel free to use a calculator. 

Schedule:
Day 1: Research jobs, apartments.
Day 2: All about checks and checking accounts
Day 3: Opening and managing a credit card
Day 4: Cars: Owning, Financing, and Leasing
Day 5: Mortgages 
Day 6: Income Tax

In between meetings, I will post a random "oh snap" prompt that they will have to integrate into their finances.

This class is great for students to get an idea of what managing finances is actually like. It is customized to their interests, so it will not feel generic. 
 
This class is best for students who live/plan to live in the United States upon adulthood.
