Experiencia de clase

Nivel de inglés: desconocido
Grado de EE. UU. 6 - 9
Nivel Beginner
Students enrolled in this class will learn the basics of crafting a horror setting and building a suspenseful narrative. We will work from prompts during the first two classes to help our new horror writers develop a feel for the genre, developing short scenes and scary protagonists. After that, students will begin work on their own piece of short horror fiction, developing an outline and writing their rough draft during weeks 3-4; class time during those weeks will be spent on thematic lectures and discussion, workshopping any troublesome scenes or plotpoints, and addressing student questions and concerns about their work. Weeks 5-6 will be devoted to sharing their first draft with other classmates, learning to provide and accept constructive feedback, and polishing their draft. Students will end the class with one completed short work of horror fiction.

This class is not geared towards beginning or reluctant writers. Students enrolled in this class should have experience writing short stories or essays (at least one page) and be able to handle reading and writing frightening fiction at an age appropriate level. An interest in horror is a must, but prior experience writing horror isn't necessary!

Students should plan to spend at least 1-2 hours of their own time each week working on their short story.

Learner progress will be evaluated through participation in class activities, completion of assignments, and improvement in individual student work – not in comparison to the work of other students. Final story drafts from the class will range from two to five pages for most students.

Orientación para padres
Horror is often a matter of personal perception. One person may find werewolves or zombies terrifying, while another may be afraid of clowns or the dark. While all work produced for this class will be appropriate for the indicated age range in terms of content, parents should feel free to inform me of any particular phobias or other fears their children need to avoid over the course of this class. Please be aware that I will not accept plagiarized or AI-generated work. "Plagiarized work" refers to the use of text in part or in full written by another writer. "AI-generated work" refers to any writing generated via any large language model (LLM) such as ChatGPT. LLMs are built using the scraped data of others' work, and the use of LLM does not teach or enhance writing or editing skills. Learners submitted plagiarized or identifiably AI-generated work will be given a warning, and then withdrawn from the class on a second offense.
Lista de útiles escolares
Students should have access to a word processing program. I strongly encourage the use of Google Docs, so students can access their work anywhere, can share their work with classmates for peer editing and feedback, and so that parents can also check on their students' progress if desired.

I have been writing and publishing horror for nearly 20 years, including short fiction works and content for horror roleplaying games. I have mentored young writers entering the horror writing industry, many of whom I have watched develop into successful, productive writers paid to work within the genre. Creative writing, particularly in a genre that engages the student, is an excellent way to help students build confidence in their writing.
