Are you a fan of horror movies? Do you love analyzing films and exploring the techniques that keep you on the edge of your seat? In this 20-week ELA horror movie class, we’ll combine film analysis with creative and analytical writing, focusing on how horror movies tell powerful stories, evoke fear, and reflect societal issues. Each week, we’ll watch a different horror classic or modern hit and discuss its themes, cinematography, sound design, character development, and cultural impact.

This class is perfect for students who want to sharpen their writing skills while diving into the thrills and chills of the horror genre. Weekly writing assignments will range from short analytical responses to full-length essays, providing opportunities for creativity, critical thinking, and personal expression.

Class will begin with our expectations. I will clarify that opinions are just opinions- none are right or wrong. I one learner thinks a movie was great, while another did not like it, neither is saying the other is wrong. We want to learn and have fun, and, in order to do so, need to maintain a respectful environment. Respect looks like being mindful of what you say, how you say it, and how others may perceive it. Learner will watch movies on their own time, outside of class.

What will be taught?
➼Film analysis techniques focused on cinematography, sound design, plot structure, and symbolism.
➼Writing skills including literary analysis, persuasive writing, compare-and-contrast essays, and creative storytelling.
➼Thematic connections between films and short stories, with an emphasis on horror as a reflection of societal fears and cultural commentary.
Literary devices and storytelling techniques used in both film and literature.

How is my class structured?
➼With a mix of guided discussions and some lecture to explore major themes, directorial choices, and genre impact.
➼Occasional video clips and slides
➼Writing prompts presented each week, giving learners a choice of topics relevant to the movie.
➼Short stories some weeks to help connect themes, use various forms of media, and apply/practice reading skills.
➼Feedback provided on writing assignments in class and after submission to help learners grow their skills.

What’s my teaching style?
➼Encouraging, interactive, and student-centered: I focus on creating a collaborative environment where students feel comfortable sharing their ideas and developing their voice. I will never make anyone participate, but provide time and different avenues for communication. I want learners to feel comfortable and to want to share their opinions and analysis.

By the end of this class, learners will have developed a deep understanding of film as a storytelling medium, sharpened their analytical and creative writing skills, and gained a new appreciation for the horror genre.

Necesidades de aprendizaje
Through my teaching experience, I have worked with autistic learners, as well as those with ADHD and Dyslexia in an academic setting. I try my best to meet learners where they are by scaffolding- providing supports and room for growth.
Orientación para padres
Parental guidance is suggested as some movies involve graphic violence and adult content. It is suggested that grownups have previously seen the movies or watch them with their learners. Grownups can also check out parent and child reviews at Common Sense Media and the IMDB Parent Guide. Learners will need access to streaming platforms, a library, or hard copy of the films. Most are included with free and paid streaming services, while others may need to be rented. Each week, I will make a post for that week's movie, including the rating & content warnings, where you can stream it, and links to the parent guides. We may occasionally play horror trivia games on Kahoot! or Gimkit if time permits. An account is not needed to play, only an invite link I will send in class.
Lista de útiles escolares
Learners will need access to streaming platforms, a library, or hard copy of the films. Most are included with free and paid streaming services, while others may need to be rented for about $4 across most VoD platforms.
