Learner age is flexible. You know your learner and their maturity level best. Learners will need to watch the movies on their own, prior to class meeting. We will begin class with background on the movie of the week and any oddities that may have happened during filming. We will discuss plot choices and filming strategies such as filters, soundtrack, and framing. How do the editing decisions affect the plot? How do they make you feel as a member of the audience? We will also discuss learners' favorite and least favorite parts, anything that stood out to them, and any lessons they may have learned. We will point out classic horror and slasher tropes such as splitting up, going into the strange room you just heard a weird noise come out of, and going into the basement alone... without a flashlight. Discussion will be learner led, leaving the possibility for other topics related to the movie and/or director to be be covered. If applicable, we will also talk about real life events the movies have inspired. *notes more mature movies. I link parents guides in the classroom, but also encourage grownups to look up the guides, and/or watch the movies with their learners. Necesidades de aprendizaje
Through my teaching experience, I have worked with autistic learners, as well as those with ADHD and Dyslexia in an academic setting. I try my best to meet learners where they are by scaffolding- providing supports and room for growth.
Orientación para padres
Parental guidance is suggested as some movies involve graphic violence and adult content. It is suggested that grownups have previously seen the movies or watch them with their learners. Grownups can also check out parent and child reviews at Common Sense Media and the IMDB Parent Guide. Learners will need access to streaming platforms, a library, or hard copy of the films.
We may occasionally play games on Kahoot!, an account is not needed.
