Each week students will learn about a person, event, or concept from United States history, using age-appropriate texts. A variety of cultures and concepts are explored that will shine light on America's past. When possible, I encourage learners to make connections from the past with present issues. A typical session will include 1. book reading, as listed below; 2. discussion of key facts; and 3. an activity to solidify understanding and provide some fun. Activities might include interactive games (like Kahoot! or Nearpod), simple hands-on projects, or fun worksheets. Weekly topics (specific books may be updated, but the topics will be as listed). Week 1: Statue of Liberty/Emma’s Poem Week 2: Independence Day Week 3: George Washington Week 4: Freedom in Congo Square Week 5: The Amazing Benjamin Franklin (2 books) Week 6: Sacagawea (by Liselotte Erdrich) Week 7: They Called Her Molly Pitcher Week 8: Grandfather’s Journey (Japanese immigration) Week 9: Abe Lincoln: The Boy Who Loved Books Week 10: Henry’s Freedom Box Week 11: Hiawatha and the Peacemaker Week 12: Dandelions April 1, 2022: Alexander Graham Bell April 8, 2022: Dolley Madison Saves George Washington April 15, 2022: The Right Word: Roget and His Thesaurus MORE TO COME!
