Mary Anning was an amazing woman, who changed the face of palaeontology forever with the fossils she discovered on her local beach. I grew up near the very beaches where she scoured for fossils, and as a history teacher (and specialist in women's history) I am SO excited to bring this class to Outschool!

Come and find out about Mary Anning, dinosaur hunter extraordinaire!

In this one-time fun and interactive class, students will learn all about Mary Anning. Students do not need to have any prior knowledge of this amazing woman.

The class will run as follows:

2 minutes: Introductions.

5 minutes: We will all chant the tongue-twister 'She sells seashells on the seashore'. (Words will be on the screen and it doesn't matter if students don't know it in advance!) Then we will talk about what the tongue-twister really means and where it comes from.

5 minutes: I will talk a little bit about Mary Anning growing up in Dorset, on the south coast of England (like me!) and about her and her Dad going out to collect fossils from the beach.

5 minutes: We will find out about Mary's first big discovery, when she was only twelve. Learners will have the opportunity to look at the original sketch Mary made and to draw their own; can they work out what it was? Students will pretend to be History Detectives and try to solve the puzzle.(Spoiler alert: People at the time thought she had discovered the skeleton of a crocodile, but nowadays we would call it an ichthyosaur!)

5 minutes: We will find out about Mary's next big find; the first full skeleton of a plesiosaurus ever discovered. But guess what happened? People didn't believe that it was real! She was not allowed to join the scientific community because she was a woman, and some people said that her discovery was a fake.

5: We will read a report from scientists in Europe in 1828 who were debating an 'unknown species of that most rare and curious of all reptiles'. This was other one of Mary's finds! Students will look at some pictures and produce their own report (in drawing or writing form) about what this "curious" creature was. (It was later classified as a Pterodactyl.)

3: Sequence challenge! Working as a group, learners will be challenged to put six events in the correct order in which they happened. Can they beat the clock and help Mary find more fossils!

Hi! My name is Susannah and I live in England.

I have a Masters from the University of Oxford, and a lifelong interest in history, literature and language.

--JANUARY 2024 UPDATE - Still offering 1:1 classes - please get in touch --

I am the founder of 'SUSANNAH - TEACHER AND WRITER' private tutoring business. I work with families from all over the world, who are searching for academically rigorous but happy and fun English, reading and writing tuition for their kids. (And Detective Pineapple might make an appearance too!)

On Outschool I am pleased to offer a successful 'English Reading and Writing Club' (for 6-8 year olds, and for 9-11 year olds) and an English GCSE Club. I also offer ad hoc Creative Writing workshops, and conversational 1:1 classes.

I am so grateful for some of the reviews I have received from Outschool parents:

"One of the best classes we have ever joined in Outschool."

"There are some “treasures” on Outschool. The classes of Ms O’Brien are certainly among the best ones."

"Susannah did a great job teaching this class. She kept the kids engaged with activities accessible to different ages and skill levels and created opportunities for everyone to participate multiple times in a fun, pressure free way."

"My son is enjoying this class. He doesn't enjoy English at school but has only good things to say about this teacher and the things he's learning. I am happy that he is becoming more confident with his English skills."

Please do send me a message if you would like to ask any questions about the classes I offer. When my schedule allows, I do open up 1:1 tutoring after discussions between parent and teacher, so do please get in touch!

I have a Masters and a PGCE (professional teaching qualification) from the University of Oxford, and bags of experience teaching English and History. I believe in asking questions and sharing stories. I love it when my students tell me interesting stories of their own!

Some fun facts about me:

* I was a Women's History Network's Fellow 2019-2021 - they're supporting me to write a novel about Nancy Astor, the first woman to join the British House of Commons (she was an American actually, and she broke ALL the rules. Very cool!)

* When I was a teenager, I argued with Tony Blair (then Prime Minister) - and it was shown on the Evening News!

* My best friend Clare spent a summer working at Buckingham Palace - she has a LOT of good stories!

I look forward to meeting your learner in one of my classes soon!
