Class A will cover the popular high school reading books: To Kill a Mockingbird, Lord of the Flies, and 1984. Students will be responsible for reading outside of class. We will discuss the assigned chapters as a class, and go over any assigned written work. To Kill a Mockingbird 4 weeks Week 1: Discuss chapters 1-6. ***These chapters are to be read before the class begins.*** Week 2: Discuss chapter 7-14 Week 3: Discuss chapters 15 - 22 Week 4: Discuss chapters 23 -31 The book will be discussed through the teacher's academic questions. The students may also be assigned short writing assignments to answer deeper level questioning. These assignments may require the students to download instructions or worksheets as well as uploading their answers. There will also be questions in the "classroom" to answer before or after class. 1984 4 weeks Week 1: Discuss chapters 1-6 Week 2: Discuss chapter 7-12 Week 3: Discuss chapters 13-18 Week 4: Discuss chapters 19-23 The book will be discussed through the teacher's academic questions. This book will require the discussion of racism in our country in the setting of 1936. As a certified teacher, we sometimes have to discuss tough and dark issues . This topic will be discussed with the respect and dignity.
1984
George Orwell's thought-provoking novel 1984 covers the themes of dehumanization, isolation, repression, loneliness, social class disparity, and abuse of power. These topics will be discussed in a respectful manner.
Lord of the Flies
"Lord of the Flies is a 1954 novel by Nobel Prize-winning British author William Golding. The book focuses on a group of British boys stranded on an uninhabited island and their disastrous attempt to govern themselves. Themes include the tension between groupthink and individuality, between rational and emotional reactions, and between morality and immorality." -Wikipedia
This book will discuss savage and primitive behaviors, rational and emotional reactions, and mortality and immortality.
