MLA Crash Course
Most people who write essays don’t understand that there is a specific, universal way of citing evidence and formatting essays. This is called MLA, and this crash course is a guide through the process of properly citing and formatting an essay.

Introduction to the Expository Essay
This lesson describes what expository writing is, what types of topics one can write about, and a demonstration of how to set up the notes document.

The Essay Research Process
This lesson explains, in detail, the research process and how to use the notes document created in lesson 4.

Writing the Body Paragraphs
This lesson is designed to show how the notes document connects with the actual writing process. I will be demonstrating how to take your research and build those body paragraphs, using an outline as a guide.

Developing Powerful Introductions and Conclusions
Being able to write a strong introduction, which starts with an effective attention-getter, is crucial if one wants their essay to stand out! In this lesson, you will be shown several attention-getter styles, examples, and how to build not only the rest of the introduction but the conclusion as well.

Compiling a Works Cited Page and the Editing Process
Just citing your sources in your essay is not enough, just as doing just a Works Cited page isn’t sufficient. You must have both, and they work together, providing your reader a place to look through your sources if they want to learn more! Paying attention to the finer details of the Works Cited page is crucial.

This lesson introduces the literary analysis essay and the different options of things one can analyze in a poem or short story to help build the essay. Literary analysis essays are super fun to write!

This lesson is a guide through the steps of the literary analysis essay outline and how to build the essay from start to finish!

Introduction to the Argument Essay and Research Process
In this lesson, the terms claim, counterclaim, and refutation will be explained, all crucial parts to a strong argument essay. This lesson also explains, in detail, the research process and how to use the notes document to find information to support the claims and counterclaims for the essay.

Writing the Claim and Counterclaim Paragraphs
This lesson goes through the difference between a claim and counterclaim paragraph and how each is constructed, using the research notes and effective sentence starters.

  • Students will learn the process of writing and write three essays at a high school level, following MLA formatting.
I am a veteran high school English teacher (20 years experience) with a master's in Education and current college writing professor.  One of the most exciting parts of teaching for me is helping students better their writing skills and guiding students through the writing and research processes.

Detalles: There may be some homework to do outside of class depending on how much work learners get done in class. I will be providing written and video feedback through every step of the writing process. To get this individualized feedback, learners must turn in their work to me :)

Detalles: I will be handing out enrichment activities to do the first three weeks of the course, and after that, each essay will be graded on a grading rubric. I use the rubrics as feedback on the final essays. However, if you want a formal, final grade report at the end of the course, please let me know, and I will provide that for you!
notebook, pencil, highlighter, and Internet for research.  All handouts and notes will be provided to the students.  If learners have access to Google Docs (or Microsoft Word), that would be super helpful!
