Use SHIROEARLYBIRD10* Children are born with an innate curiosity that questions everything about our natural world. What are things made out of? Where did it come from? Why is it like this? How does it work? Problem-based learning seeks to capitalize on student's natural curiosity and hunger to solve problems and explore. Instead of the traditional lecture as a primary mode of information transfer, problem-based learning frames learning with a problem or a story. Students then acquire and learn science along the way to help them solve the problem. This problem-based learning course is a singular unit curriculum that corresponds to atomic theory, the periodic table, and bonding chapters in a typical chemistry course. This unit would usually take up one quarter (8-9 weeks) of a traditional science course. These topics will give students a good foundation to learn other units of chemistry. Students are immediately presented with the problem of what material should their hypothetical ancient civilization currency be made out of which they must solve as a final report at the end of the unit (45% of grade). Students will also be assessed through a mid-unit quiz (10% of grade) and a final test (45% of grade). This self-paced course also includes one live Q&A tutoring session and email correspondence to check in with the instructor. Upon completion of the course, students will receive a certificate with their grade reported on it that can be used for transcript purposes. To reduce the amount of screen time, students will receive an e-copy of the handout which needs to be printed. There are no pre-recorded lectures in this course. Instead students will read and work through the student packet which gives an explanation of everything the student will need to learn and do. This unit also comes with two labs that can be done at home with chemicals that can be found at home or ordered through Amazon (materials not included at this moment) or through an online simulation. Students will also receive a periodic table and a VESPR chart which need to be printed and used throughout the unit. Parents can request a copy of the teacher's edition to provide support for their child.
