In this class, we will explore classic and contemporary works of English literature. In this 3 period class, we will explore books and movies used in 10th-12th grade language arts! We will use such films as “Casablanca” and “Thirteen Days.” We will also explore some of the themes surrounding these movies and compare/contrast the concepts. We will incorporate literary themes in discussion of film elements.
Students will participate in live and online discussions, listening and read aloud reading activities, reader’s theater, audio video materials (videos, recordings), comprehension, critical thinking, and writing activities to further their understanding and engagement with the material.
This is a reading and writing intensive class.

Reading strategies and comprehension skills will be briefly reviewed.

This is an introductory class and there is no prerequisite knowledge required.

It is hoped to be able to get through 2 films in the 3 class term, however it is possible to go faster or slower based on student needs and interest levels.

The proposed schedule is:
Class 1: Introduction to film in ELA: The How’s and Why’s”
Class 2: Watch “ Casablanca”
Class 3: Watch “Thirteen Days”

On their own: complete a comparison of the two with regards to common themes and connections.

Assignments will include reading/comprehension and comparison as well as understanding of themes within the world view

Each week may also include a mini lesson on the author, subject matter or bridge activity as well.

Homework will include a reading, comprehension/critical thinking discussion question, as well as an optional mini lesson and bridge activity for each book.

Learner progress is evaluated based on completion of assignments and participation in class and online discussions.
