This ongoing book club will rotate through all of the Harry Potter books in order, so if your child needs more than one week to read a book, that's fine! You can jump into the lessons when it is a good time for your family. The only direct instruction during these lessons will be when I develop understanding of a specific literacy skill which learners will then apply during class discussion. This will happen at the beginning of each class period leaving plenty of time to develop ideas with other club members. The lessons will be a more Socratic, book-club style class during which students will support the learning of others, have a safe place to discuss ideas and opinions, and defend their opinions in a respectful manner. Soft social skills such as leadership, active listening, supportive words and respectful disagreement will be taught through the entirety of the club. The classes will all follow the following schedule: The first part of the class will be set aside for club member bonding. This time is essential in establishing the trust necessary for a truly safe Socratic class The next part of the class will be direct instruction of one important skill that the book club will discuss for the rest of the class In the Socratic style, the teacher is a facilitator and students learn from one another; therefore, the bulk of each lesson will be time for all members of the book club to talk about their ideas and opinions with the skill as a focus area. All all members of the club will be free to talk about whatever is important to them as well. We will discuss underlying principles as they apply to learner's lives, develop vocabulary etymology when appropriate, and challenge our assumptions on a weekly basis. The last part of the class will be set aside for me to quickly pre-teach the next lesson so that each book club member will know what to notice when reading the book for the next class. The literacy skills to be taught will be as follows: Week of June 9, July 21, September 15, November 3 Book 1, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone: Conflict Week of June 16, July 28, September 22, November 10 Book 2, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets: Inference Week of June 23, August 4, September 29, November 17 Book 3, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban: Figurative Language Week of June 30, August 11, October 6, November 24 Book 4, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire: Symbolism Week of July 7, August 18, October 13, December 1 Book 5, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix: Latin roots Week of July 14, September 1, October 20, December 8 Book 6, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince: Descriptive Writing Week of July 21, September 8, October 27, December 15 Book 7, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows: Critical Reading We will not be discussing Book 8
